Where should I go on vacation this summer

Hi fellow EFers!

Am considering hoping in the car and driving north someplace nice this summer (August) for a few weeks vacation. Someplace like maybe Scotland or Norway or any other destination between here and the northern circle. Once there would like to visit the ocean and do a little hiking and maybe some horse back riding. Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Where should I go on vacation this summer

There used to be ferries from Amsterdam / Hook of Holland to Newcastle. Almost in Scotland then
Maybe head through the highlands and see if you can find a way to the Outer Hebrides.
Lucky you have so much time.

Just adding to the post above, Flybe operate flights to Barra, Stornoway and Benbecula in the Hebrides. https://www.flybe.com/

Personally, I'd head to Cornwall, but it's probably too crowded for you in August. There was a good series on UK tv recently that would give you some good ideas, particularly if you fast forward through the more inland routes shown.

I'd recommend episode 2: Isle of Arran, Episode 3: Dumfries and Galloway (stunning beach walks) and Episode 6: Jersey.

The Channel Islands are often overlooked, but have some spectacular scenery, hidden bays and coastal scenery. You can get a car ferry over from St.Malo, have a week there, then get the ferry to Poole, Dorset, and fly to some great places from Southampton or Bournemouth airport.

The trip I want to take my OH on is glamping in Jersey Zoo / Durrell Wildlife Trust.

Since you mention hopping in the car, I'd recommend driving to Norway. Once in Oslo you can 1) Drive down the coast to Kristiansand or ; 2) Drive up through the valleys to Lillehammer, Geilo and then; 3) Visit Sognefjord. I've also driven the coast road north up to the Arctic border. Just wonderful. You're spoilt for choice, really.

How long did it take you to drive to Oslo, Zappa? We are also considering Norway, and wonder if driving is an option for us

I've never driven from here. My buddy took his three kids (12,15,18) from Annecy last summer and I think they took two days with two drivers. However, the kids are pleading for somewhere nearer this year... Google maps says 20h from Annecy to Moss, on Oslo fjord, without ferries. To make it shorter, you can drive to the tip of Denmark and take a ferry from there, but I find Denmark tame compared to the Swedish coast. Could be good with younger kids.

I took a roadtrip to Scotland a few years back, from Edinburgh up to Inverness, then across and down the other way, passing though Glasgow. It was glorious and I particularly loved the Isle of Skye.

+1 for Norway. It is even more beautiful than Switzerland. We did a self-driving kind of thing and took more than a 1,000 photos. Just super and cannot recommend it enough.
