day trips in and around zurich

Hello everyone
This is my second time around in Zurich. I had been to the usual tourist places like lake zurich, old town zurich, uteilberg last time. Looking for some hidden gems and must visits around zurich, I will be staying here for few months and planning weekend trips around Zurich.
Thanks

Re: day trips in and around zurich

Been here a while. Done the Zurich shizzle loads of times. And the lake trips, inc. Rapperswill. Great.

Been further afield too. Schaffhausen and Rheinfalls is fantastic. Engleburg is lovely.

On our last trip, went to Pilatus mountain in Lucerne. Go up the cog railway from Alpnachstad.

Wow. Just wow. Wow again. Best thing yet. (It was sunny though).

Expensive? You bet. 73 CHF per person. But we are going again with 2 friends in July and will do the Golden round trip (cog railway up, cable car down, bus to Lucerne, boat on lake back) at 100+ per person. They're not so well off but I am going to pay because it is so amazing. 360 degree views, a walk at 3000m that makes you gasp, sheer cliffs with dodgy health and safety... it is a MUST.

And yet, if you check the thread "Top 5 things to do in Switzerland", Pilatus makes it in at a mere number 6!

Learning point. Zurich is nice. But Switzerland is not Zurich...

Regards

Ian

Re: day trips in and around zurich

Came across this list of interesting places and ideas on the local transport homepage.
I'd say there are ideas for pretty well everyone in there. Took a while to open but don't give up.

Einsiedeln grosse Alpafahrt
At Klosterdorf, Einsiedeln, Kanton Schwyz

The Alpine descent day for the cows returning from the mountains is set for 16 September from around 11.45 until 15.00

This move takes place every 5 years, most recently in 2012. The procession takes place with the backdrop of the Einsiedeln monastery.
And after the procession there's also the Einsiedeln Monastery which is very much worth a visit too. Both are free
