No reservation for Piccolo Paradiso campground

We're going to try camping for a few days this summer, and decided on Piccolo Paradiso near Locarno after having read a few good reviews on this forum. However, we didn't make a reservation as our stopover in Ticino is part of a longer trip and we wanted to retain some flexibility on dates. When I initially looked at their website I got the impression that there are a certain number of spots that are left free on a "first come, first served" basis. I figured that if we arrived early in the morning we'd be okay. Now I'm not so sure, and since we have three small children I'm not keen on taking the risk of finding ourselves with no accommodation at the height of the tourist season.

Has anyone camped there before and know how the reservation (or non-reservation) system works? Do we have a chance of getting a site if we arrive early or should I be looking for something else already? Thanks!

Re: No reservation for Piccolo Paradiso campground

We have camped there but put in a reservation months beforehand so we didn't have a problem.

It depends when you are going there. If you are dictated by school holidays and therefore going to roll up there at peak season you might run into a full site. Either way, I would arrive there as early as possible. Maybe on the Thursday/Friday, too, seeing as most people would arrive on a Saturday looking for a pitch.

Yes our vacation schedule is dictated by the school holidays...

When were you there? Did it seem full?

Seems like booking for the summer is closed, but they say you can call 2 hours before to ask if it's full.
I would have alternatives ready.

Yes, most of the campgrounds in Ticino only accept reservations up to a certain date. Some also only accept reservations of 7 days or more, while we will only be staying 5.

In the end I found a different campground (Delta) that still accepts reservations and reserved a spot. I expect that we would have been fine regardless, but we will be in Zermatt the night before so this way we don't have to rush or worry.

We were there during an August (think it was 4 years ago). It was full to capacity as far as I could tell, although I didn't really pay attention to the whole site - it could have had spaces.
