It will be cold, so don't plan any long walks!
One of the first, and best snow hikes I've ever done was from Ellmau in the Tyrol, through the Hartkaiser foot hills to Astberg and Reith, then past Schwarzee and into Kitzbuhl in the first week of January 1988. Loved it and still remember it like it was yesterday.

For the Austria leg, have a look at this route... Seefeld - Innsbruck (consider staying in Igls) - Kufstein (great little castle) - Zell am See (for trip to Grossglockner) -a few nights in (my beloved) Salzburg - St. Wolfgang - Hallstatt.

If you can line up the stay in Salzburg to cover 23-26 December, there's a half day afternoon trip from the city to the 'Silent Night' chapel at Oberndorf on Christmas Eve. When I did the Oberndorf trip, we got back to Salzburg just in time for the alp horn concert on the steps of the cathedral, then dinner at the hotel and back to the cathedral for midnight mass. I'm not religious, but WOW! It's a stunning event. I've been a couple of times, and one year when my brother went, Placido Domingo was one of the soloists.

Thanks! He plays French horn and loves music and fancy castles. The church event sounds fantastic. Totally will put it on our agenda.

Sounds great. I do ethnographic fieldwork research and do this kind of things a lot. I introduced myself to villagers and stayed their home for several nights. They drank with me every night coz I spoke their language...In the Himalayas. It was super good. I avoid all the backpacker tourists coz they aren't interesting and wherever they go they ruined the authentic life of the villages.

Czechs are all old school villagers, really, small scale life. People obsess over domestic skills and diy, art and music, principles and ideals. People do not like show offs and are unable to fake smalltalk. Even though the city can be overwhelming, if you find locals to befriend - they are humble and modest. There is a lot of stuff on a low budget, too, if you google Prague on a tight budget, you will find probably the most interesting things out there. The fancy stuff is usually for hard to please foreign travellers, and it is not so fun. Try pig's knee to eat, or smoked beef tongue, brain...stewed kidneys, lol. Otherwise the food can be inexpensive if you move a street away from the biggest tourist traps, 3 bucks for dinner, sometimes. Lots of weird, cheap and hipster stuff you might enjoy.

If you want to get cued in some history, watch "Closely watched trains", "Sedmikrasky" and "Holky z porcelanu", our household classics.

Beware of petty crime, pickpockets and cab rip offs, even in restos and exchange offices.

I would not drink with Czechs.

I always felt that the superficial powers of some backpackers are nothing against the generations of old, set ways. Even if it is something we no longer see, it still sticks. You will smell it from the walls, read it in faces.

I might ping you about school ethnography.
