I need tips on sightseeing in one day!

I have a good friend coming over from South Africa for the first time, for a conference. He has set aside the last day of his stay in Switzerland to spend with me, which will really be his only sightseeing day. I live in Menzingen, near Zug, he will be in Mannensdorf, canton Zurich. We will have between 9:00 a.m. & 8:00 pm when he has to check in at the airport. I would obviously want to show him my home, but also would like to show him some sights. All that came to mind was to take him on a boat trip on Lake Lucerne, which I think is a wonderful synopsis of what Switzerland is about, and maybe a stroll around the old part of Zurich or Zug. Can anybody give me any more hints on what we could do in the allocated time?

I am also from SA, but live here permanently (just like yr friend)...and believe me, whatever you will show your friend will just be awesome.

There is just so many nice things to show and to do, but I do think that a boatride takes maybe just a bit to much time, and you do not see anything than the water (yes, the surroundings are stunning, but as a fellow SA you wanna see what life here is about) so, I always take my friends to Rapperswil, then take the quick and easy walk up to that old church in Rapperswil, you can see so so much from up that hill/church, then walk back and go and have a nice coffee at Starbucks in Rapperswil. Than, I guess yr idea of Zurich City is a good one. I would then go to Zur, how about the old city, have lunch there in one of those great and cosy places on teh street (old city part) and then just walk there, maybe take a walk to a nice park closeby (do not know Zur so so well), buy a great sandwich and drink, have a nice picnic/talk talk talk...under a nice tree, and then later go to teh airport.

That is what I would have done if it was my SA friend...

I know my friends always want to see where I live, and how normal life is (away from crime heheheh - had to mention that!!)

have fun with yr friend,

It all depends on the weather. If its good the Rhein Falls. Stein am Rhein and Santis on the way back.

Re: I need tips on sightseeing in one day!

Get a day ticket for the train and go on a tour.

I had some distant relatives over from South America. They'd never seen mountains or snow before so I took them to Andermatt by boat and train and stayed there overnight. The next day we caught the postal bus and train to Locarno, then onwards by the Centovalli, Simplon, Lötschberg, Brünig back to Lucerne and Zürich. I think even I never saw so many mountains in one day, and so many different climatic zones either.

Isn't that a contradiction in terms?
