Driving - Zurich to UK

Hi all,
I'm sure there's a thread someone can point me to but I want to drive back to the UK with my dog (he has a passport).
Just wondered if anyone can suggest best route, time to travel, places to stay overnight before taking the ferry/Eurotunnel and maybe cheapest travel options?
Also, what do I legally have to transport my dog in, a cage?
All advise and suggestions greatly received.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Driving - Zurich to UK

The route I always took was from Lugano - Basel (your case Zurich - Basel)
Basel - Reims via Strasbourg
Reims - Calais

I used to stay either in the Novotel at Mazieres les Metz or the Novotel at Reims Tinqueux. Both are very close to the motorway, safe and reasonably priced.

Reims is then about a 2.5 hour drive to the Ferry / Eurotunnel at Calais.

Re: Driving - Zurich to UK

viamichelin route planner gives you various options and shows you the price of tolls, petrol etc. If you want to avoid tolls then try to avoid France. It can get busy at rush hour around major cities, of course. France does or did have the Formule 1 motels though.
