Friendly warning about booking Europcar via Easyjet

Hi people,

I'm not angry but rather amused at this amazing combination of facts.
So for your information:

1. One-way flights + car rental are prone to error due to a defect in the Easyjet website: It never prompts you for the rental car's return date.
It sets the return date to 24 hours after arrival and you stand a good chance finalizing your booking like that.
2. The Easyjet website doesn't allow any changes to car rental dates. Flights- yes, Seats- yes- but car rental- no.
3. The Easyjet website allows you to entirely cancel the rental car, but you get no money back. The fine for cancelling equals the amount to be returned.
4. Europcar entirely refuses to alter any bookings originating from Easyjet.

I hope that was clear.
Cheers

Perhaps that's the new improved easyjet site.

On the old one I once booked flight to Manchester and reserved a rental car - it booked the pickup 24h before my flight arrived.

When I got to the desk they told me they had cancelled the rental because I hadn't picked it up, and charged my credit car a penalty and... they didn't have any cars of the size I had reserved, so they could only offer me a more expensive one.

As a rule of thumb, NEVER book any services together with your flight, it's almost always more expensive (there was a time when Ebookers had a flat 50 CHF discount on any flight+car rental.. you could add a 1 day car rental in DXB or any other cheap place for like 15 CHF and get the flight 35 CHF off.. somehow that offer quickly vanished )

Same for hotels offered after you've booked a flight - you'll pay more than finding the hotel directly through Trivago and the like. And you don't get any "protection", its a different contract.

Only package holidays (Pauschalreisen in German) are sometimes worth it. You're getting sometimes a better deal out of them, if the whole package is what you're looking for as compared to having booked everything individually.

Not in my experience. We have booked a long weekend to Cornwall in July and booking the Europcar rental through the Easyjet site was cheaper than via the Europcar site directly. I was actually quite surprised.

I'd suggest you try websites like "https://www.billiger-mietwagen.de/" (no advertisement, they're just by far the longest-running website for "neutral" car rentals around the world)

I've yet to come to any destination where they're NOT massively below what an airline is asking for (Swiss does show what "their" rental costs right after booking, which is when I open the billiger-mietwagen website and check the offers there..)

I avoid Europcar in the UK. Very lax in noting actual damage before rental and very enthusiastic with a fine tooth comb after you have returned it, and left.

Twice we provided them with photos and videos proving the pre-existing cosmetic damages.

The very last time we returned a car we decided to do a walk around video of the car. One of their people saw us and ran out claiming ‘you don’t have to this’and tried to get us to stop and delete the video.

The two times they tried to ‘ding’ us was when the wife had bought the full cdw etc. Meaning we wouldn’t have paid, but they would charge the insurance company. Win-win? Not, it’s dishonest.

I am not surprised. I rent cars quite regularly and I have not rented with a company directly in years: Just as I use websites like skyscanner to find cheap flights do I use check24.de to find cheap rental cars. The difference is that those portals have also a lot of brokers on there, so I would rent like "Europcar via XYZ"... the exact same service for a lower price. The airline offers were usually on par at max with the brokers but I have free cancellation, can make changes and so on. One thing to point out: The rental companies typically try to upsell you some insurances that the brokers already included, so the booking comes with an extra page in the local language which says "No thanks, I already got a full cover" with then a list of the waivers you have booked... I should have taken some photos of some of the agents when you hand this one to them.
