Best towns down East side of Lake Zurich

I'm going from Zurich to the Bachmann winery near Stafa on a weekend afternoon, and am looking for places to stop along the way down the East Side of the lake.

Could be nice cafes on the lake, towns to walk around, hiking, or museums.

Thank you!

Re: Best towns down East side of Lake Zurich

Weekend weather looks utterly shite. You might want to look for indoor activities or put it off for a week or so.

EDIT - just re-read it and you didn't specify this weekend, sorry! If you do get a break in the weather and go another weekend, there are a few nice walks up by the Pfannenstil area.

You might like to consider these:

Personally, I love the biergarten at the Sonne Hotel, and the old town of Rapperswil is lovely.

Oh wow - so much. Are you with car, walking, bike or other?
What time of year, and how much time do you have? I'll leave the rest up to other posters.

I love the Rapperswil Altstadt, one of the nicest places to while away a few hours on the lakefront.

A current favourite coffee break spot is Cafe Good:

This will actually be this weekend, so I am keeping an eye on the weather, and would basically be a way to spend a half a day. No car, so all trains and buses.

Thank you Meloncollie as I have family visiting (8 in total...) and was planning a trip to Rapperswil and looking for a good lunch spot. Do they serve lunch as well? If not, any lunch recommendations from you or other EFers?

Re: Best towns down East side of Lake Zurich

Whilst you need to be in Stafa in the afternoon, I'd keep it simple by sticking with the S7 line, rather than chopping and changing trains.

You could stop off in Meilen and walk down to the lakeside for coffee at https://www.loewen-meilen.ch/ After the winery, I'd head to Rapperswil for dinner because you often get spectacular sunsets over the lake from there.

Re: Best towns down East side of Lake Zurich

What i like to do in that area when i have time is to travel part of the way on the ZSG ship (preferably on one of the paddle steamers) and then spontaneously get off at some random place that looks nice and walk from there to the next village, or maybe the one after that (it's never far, the places along the lakefront are all pretty close together) and then catch the train back into Zürich, or if I have time, first stop off at some nice garden restaurant / cafe / beer garden or whatever overlooking the lake.
