Depending on location you will have fireworks in the evening, either on July 31st or August 1st. Shops will be closed on August 1st, so it's a long weekend.

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

during the day you just relax and do nothing (you cant do anything as everything is closed) and in the evening most people either go out to dinner and watch fireworks or have a little party themselves and watch/fire off their own fireworks. Some communities offer little cocktail parties etc so it really depends where you live.

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

On Uetliberg, there will be fireworks on the night of 31 July. Not sure where to sit...anyone here can advise?

Also, buy lots of fireworks (not cheap) and let them off in the night!
It is one of the nights where noise is allowed.
Be ready with a fire-extinguisher though...
Good luck!

I will enjoy and celebrate the Swiss national day with a weekend trip to Paris (where the shops are open).

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

This is my first National Swiss day here in Zurich and I am seriously looking forward to it. I often watched the fireworks on the webcam when I was back home in England so it will be great to be here in person.

From what information I have gathered and please for you 'regulars' do correct me if I am wrong, but there are various ways, which each district celebrates. Some have music and fireworks, others have different things going on

I'm really looking forward to it too! Not sure where we will go, maybe into Zug or along to a friends house in Walchwil. Not sure they will be able to top fasnacht for mentalism though.

The extended weekend is also an opportunity for travel outside the country. I am personally considering Eastern Europe, a still relatively underrated area in my opinion.

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

We have a panoramic view of the many fireworks displays along the lake, all the way from the city to the Obersee - it's a night of pure magic.

Unfortunately, I won't see a thing.

I'll be down in the cellar, windows closed, blinds drawn, TTouch at the ready, Bach and Mozart blaring, Tierspital programmed into speed dial - trying to calm my crew of terrified mutts. My oldest becomes almost paralyzed with fright; I need to check every few minutes to ensure he is still breathing.

I usually pack up the hounds and head for France (hundreds of Swiss dog owners invade the border towns every 1 August), but this year said oldie can't leave the country- so escaping the noise is out, and the cellar is our only alternative. Around here, it's like the scene from 'Apocalypse Now' - I swear my neighbors all have howitzers.

And this year, the celebrations will go on all weekend...

(I've always wondered - how do farm animals cope?)

1 August is a great day for the humans... but do spare a thought for the poor critters.

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

Relax during the day maybe go out on the lake and have a swim, then in the evening bbq, watch the fireworks from our garden, and light the ones we have bought, probably have the neighbours round for some fine red wine, and cold beers, as so many of our friends are on holiday at the moment.

On private fireworks:

Be careful, depending on location the release of private fireworks may be banned at short notice because of dry forests ...

We have always been very careful with our private fireworks, and have never had any problems, but if they are banned then we will set them off another time when it is allowed

Re: What do you do on National Swiss day?

On Swiss National Day: Have brunch on a farm:
http://www.brunch.ch/DesktopDefault....dex=1&langid=1
Many farmers open their farms on 1st August. Enjoy farmers' brunch with fresh produce. Visit the stables. Take a look at the vegetable gardens and orchards. Pet the farm animals. Maybe roll in the hay?

Not to be missed. Last year, more than 200,000 Swiss residents enjoyed the "Bauernbrunch" on 1st August. Some communes subsidize the cost. Better hurry to reserve!!

I wouldn't really worry about this national day. The weekend after with the Zurich street parade is much more interesting
