Montreux to Chur via Valais

Hello,

This weekend we will be travelling to Chur for the weekend. We have a day to get there and as it wont take that long we will take the scenic route, down through the Valais. Given that we will have a couple of oppurtunities to stop off does anyone have any specific recommendations where we might pause on the way.

thanks

mike

Apart from Sion and Brig (Stockalper palace is worth a visit) there's not many places to stop off in the Upper Valais if you're just driving through, other than to admire the scenery. Have you considered the route through Thun/Interlaken?

Pretty flexible on the whole route thing. I know interlaken is nice and pretty you think that would be a better way to do it ?

You can always head up to see the Aletschgletscher by taking the cablecar up Eggishorn. If the weather is good, it'll be really nice.

In Ilanz, there is the Surselvabrau brewery.

Once the motorway stops, heading east, things really slow down. Last week I went Zurich to Verbier via Montreaux taking 3 hours by car. The return scenic trip via the Furka pass took 5 hours.

I just find the Upper Valais beyond Sion a bit bleak. Kind of a place you have to pass through to get somewhere rather than a destination in itself. And as Yorkine says, things slow down a lot once the motorway ends.

If you go by car, you will drive across two remarkable mountain passes.
The Furka Pass and the Oberalp Pass.

The Furka Pass is especially nice as you will drive past the Rhone-Glacier and there is also a historical steam-only cogweheel railway between Gletsch (VS) and Realp (UR).

If you remeber the 007 movie "Godlfinger", the scenes on the mountain pass have been shot on and around the Furka area.

I agree, the Furka pass is pretty special. Plan to spend some time stopping to enjoy it and taking photos on the way up between Gletsch and the top.

I disagree with the comments on the upper Valais region, or Goms as it is known - I think it is a very pleasant area. You should stop in one of the villages between Niederwald and Oberwald just to look at the buildings, and have a quick wander around the old streets - they have really retained the traditional style very well.

Enjoy the trip!

In addition to the Rhône Glacier, you can also stop on the Oberalppass to admire the lake (source of the Rhine, the other big river in CH), after lunch in Andermatt (UR).

Next stop in Sedrun where it is possible to visit the Gotthard base tunnel section there. edit: oops, booked out

Down in Disentis, you can make a stop to visit the Convent museum.

In Sumvitg, the biggest goldfind of Switzerland was made (1.4kg). You can admire a piece of it in Chur's Naturmuseum.

Too bad you don't get to see the Ruinaulta from the road between Sagogn and Trin, so here's some pics and website, great hiking there.

Are you sure about this? According to my topographical map, the lake at the top of the Oberalp pass flows west into the Reuss river via Andermatt. The Rhine doesn't start until you are onto the east side of the Oberalp pass.

Oops, correct, the source of the Rhine is on the other side in the Tomasee/Lai da Tuma and takes a bit of a walk. Molte scusi!
