The "Blaggedde" will be sold (it was even sold during the war) and you better make sure you get one, it will become one of these special ones.

I’m a bit surprised that you find this a bad move doropfiz.

Isolating the spread of the virus is within all our best interests. Especially those more vulnerable. The rest of us don’t necessarily care about potential infections, and may need to be cooped-up in isolation at home for a couple of weeks in worst case.

Personally, I’m taking all precautions, and believe that current measures taken by Switzerland are absolutely correct:

https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/schweiz...story/24298212
Since my post has received several reactions, I'd like to make it clear what I meant.

I did not mean that cancelling and then prohibiting the Basler Fasnacht is a bad move. On the contrary, in the face of a virus we don't yet understand and that is spreading in ways the consequences of which we can't yet anticipate, cancelling the event seems reasonable and correct. (Sorry, didn't read the Tagesanzeiger article as it's behind a paywall.)

What I meant was that when I first read the news that this year Morgestraich was not going to happen, my belly did a double-flip-flop because it is so significant. I meant that it is "unthinkable" in the sense of "unimaginable", of "never been seen or heard of in my lifetime" (as Curley pointed out, otherwise only ever cancelled during the World Wars).

I think it is terribly sad for all those who usually participate, or who travel there specifically to do so, whether in the parade or as spectators.

The cancellation shines a light on an aspect of the changes in our world: a greater population than ever before, and global travel, have caused the Swiss federal councel, out of sensible concern for the vulnerable, to decide to bring down a stalwart Swiss institution. Sadly, very sadly. But rightly so. So while it is bitter, yes, it is the right move.

I hope that has now cleared up any confusion about what I had meant with my post.

You are right, I read her post in exactly the same way. There are many people however that don‘t read things the same way. I was one a walk with a completely switched on 76 year old that navigates the internet and i-phone like a Profi just this afternoon.

She still thinks that the risks are like a normal grippe. Doubt that she‘s the only one.

Did my bit, it was useless. People like you make me want to throw-up btw.

Bye.
I thought you were leaving this forum? With comments like that I really think you should.

Don't worry, Nick. I've made her throw up a few times but she seems to recover just fine.

It may only be behind a paywall if you follow the links from EF. If you goto https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/, it shouldn‘t be behind a paywall.

I knew what you meant, and I believe that you knew what I meant. The amount of groans I received to wanting to distribute factual information, and leaving the „playground“ to another thread has been astounding. In IT we often call the „playground“ a space to experiment, that will have no effect on the actual environment.

I was out for a walk with a 76 year old Swiss woman yesterday, who is married to a 62 year old man since 30 years, and despite wearing Nikes and being fully cognizant with working the internet, was blissfully unaware of the latest situation.

With her being within in a high-risk group to suffer the most, I didn‘t offer my hand, or a cheek kiss. When I offered her some of my hand disinfectant, which I use because I suffer from hay fever at the moment (alder) and rub my eyes a lot, she refused. She probably thought I was crazy, as clearly many on EF do, judging by the groans to my post.

But that walk made me aware that those most vulnerable are at most risk. I‘m personally not scared: have an active lifestyle, haven‘t been ill since a couple of years. But I am only concerned about containing the spread of the virus.

I will take your advice GrumpyGrapeFruit, and make the final step to abscond from EF. For a little while, I thought it would still be good to continue. Was completely wrong.

It's the traders I feel sorry for.
There will be 10s of '000s of merguez , cervelat, schüblig and kalberwurst going uneaten. Plus all the people planning to work and earn a few quid.

No problem, it will be in Germany in no time and keep the Dutch busy trying to analyze what the pharmacy in Basel tried to sneak past this time.

You can have the best intent in the world, but people have to decide for themselves. And risk categories are averages - maybe your 73 year old friend is quite robust and not at high risk after all. There are exceptions to everything.

All you can do is inform and sometimes give assistance where possible.

Made my post in good faith. And the situation has been confirmed by the Swiss Government in the meantime.

I came here without understanding the language well, and thought that might be the same in EF.

You are are one of the only informative EFers.

It is a situation in which all Swiss people should not be alarmed, just prepared in case we find ourselves in a situation of self-isolation. Fatalities occur within those that are within a certain age range, and have already existing health conditions.

I personally don’t want to give-on any virus that would shorten the life of someone else. And I’m not sure where this information is published in English.
