I think that the thread was about the Basler Fastnacht having been cancelled.
Anyone have posts which directly relate to the current situation in the meantime?

Did try, but Google translate will also do it.

Why do people have to fight so much online? Please guys, let’s be kinder to each other, myself included.
This. I just don't see the point, at all, of anyone's being wilfully aggressive (in a teensy or in a big way) towards another user on a forum.

But I do get that almost everyone has topics or phrases that can move them to passion.

Whenever we don't understand why or what happened, but it's clear that there's some sort of upset, it just seems to me to be plain good manners not to worsen anyone else's annoyance/hurt, etc.. Whenever we do know how those buttons can be pushed, it behooves us to desist.

Made my post in good faith. And the situation has been confirmed by the Swiss Government in the meantime.

I came here without understanding the language well, and thought that might be the same in EF.

.... I’m not sure where this information is published in English.
Here is some
http://who.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsd...1c248d52ab9c61

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Here, one can arrange the data in several sequences, one of which is by country.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Over on the other thread, I've posted a video about sneezing into the crook of one's elbow. https://www.englishforum.ch/3152659-post1192.html

And here's the Federal Swiss government's official info
https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/en/home...novel-cov.html

Doesn’t matter. There was a time when EF provided great information to anyone coming here from elsewhere. You were one of them (in tiny amounts as far as I remember).

There was also a time when members would have been happy to get the current news that could impact them in English.

These times are clearly over (or have been replaced by Google translate)
Hope that they can continue to get all the other advice.

A search on EF should bring-up anything.

Wearing Nike shoes indicates she’s really a hipster in a 76 year old body.

The point was that even though this old lady can navigate an iPhone and uses the internet with access to all the latest “info”, she hasn’t jumped on the panic train and that made the poster sad for some reason.

Since these feeble minded souls (with the greatest risk profile) won’t protect themselves, we have to do it for them and anybody that isn’t willing to do this is just an uncaring and selfish asshole.

Exactly! Never mind the lady was born during the war and knows what a real threat is.

I don’t think a 76 year old will really know very much about living during the war since she would only have been one at the most by the time the war ended.

And of course the day it ended, Switzerland - and all other countries - were back on their rich and prosperous feet the next day.

It may only be behind a paywall if you follow the links from EF. If you goto https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/, it shouldn‘t be behind a paywall.

I knew what you meant, and I believe that you knew what I meant. The amount of groans I received to wanting to distribute factual information, and leaving the „playground“ to another thread has been astounding. In IT we often call the „playground“ a space to experiment, that will have no effect on the actual environment.

I was out for a walk with a 76 year old Swiss woman yesterday, who is married to a 62 year old man since 30 years, and despite wearing Nikes and being fully cognizant with working the internet, was blissfully unaware of the latest situation.

With her being within in a high-risk group to suffer the most, I didn‘t offer my hand, or a cheek kiss. When I offered her some of my hand disinfectant, which I use because I suffer from hay fever at the moment (alder) and rub my eyes a lot, she refused. She probably thought I was crazy, as clearly many on EF do, judging by the groans to my post.

But that walk made me aware that those most vulnerable are at most risk. I‘m personally not scared: have an active lifestyle, haven‘t been ill since a couple of years. But I am only concerned about containing the spread of the virus.

I will take your advice GrumpyGrapeFruit, and make the final step to abscond from EF. For a little while, I thought it would still be good to continue. Was completely wrong.
Everyone is prudent these days, ZR. I think people have received the necessary info via different channels - at work, school, tv, radio etc.

It's nice of you to worry for the more vulnerable ones and all, but you can't really do more than what you already do. Hope you're well and a bit more relaxed now. Panic doesn't help...take care of yourself and don't worry too much about this forum.

honestly, i think the cancellation is a huge over-reaction. i see people are getting hysterical over this and panic buying stuff.

on the other hand, it's almost impossible for the authorities not to cancel it as if any additional cases turn up (whether or not they would happen absent cancellation) they would get crucified.

Of course not but they were hardly under threat were they? Unless you consider food shortages as a threat.
A 76 year old born here would have no idea about what life was like living through war unless she’d travelled to and lived in a war zone during her life.

Re: Basler Fasnacht 2020

I got to our local Coop on Saturday wanting to get some tinned tomatoes for a pasta sauce I was going to make. Entire shelf of tinned tomatoes emptied. And quite a bit of dried pasta gone, too. Somebody panic-bought according to the staff.

Everything else in the supermarket was in plentiful supply. So whoever it was didn’t know how to cook.

Update: Tinned veg was also looking depleted today. Though the supermarket normally restocks on a Monday.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Basler Fasnacht 2020

I was in Basel yesterday to attend the already paid-for steak lunch the clique usually has before joining the Wednesday cortége.

The atmosphere in Basel, I felt was understandably muted and glum. Hats off to the Baslers for trying to make the best of the situation. For many, where it waa not time dependent, the sújet has been parked until next year - so no need to buy new costumes and masks.

The knock-on for local businesses - what with that and Basel World being off the menu - is going to be bad. I am aware that the pharma companies are curtailing events they organise and Art Basel now looks in danger. A large part of the local revenue is based on hosting such events.

Events like Fasnacht where the folk let their hair down for a few days act as a social pressure valve. I hope not too long in the future, this particular crisis will diminish and people can have their annual bit of fun.

Not much else to add, really.

Cheers,
Nick
