Basler Fasnacht 2020

I'm planning a visit to Basler Fasnacht in March, not having been before, though I have been to Lucerne Fasnacht.

Other than the key events, are there any other fringe events worth visiting?

Where is the best place to see the procession?

After Fasnacht, I will be in Zurich for a few days as I haven't been back to Switzerland for well over a year. I hope to catch up with some of you in either location.

Start off with the Liestaler fire parade the day before then slowly make your way back to Basel for the Morgenstraich and if you don´t have tinnitus you will have afterwards.

As you are probably aware, this has been cancelled along with all events having more than 1000 people, due to the Corona virus

Quite right too - maintaining the blood alcohol level higher than 0.4mg/l reduces infection rate by 78%. Much more effective than masks, although obviously has practical and legal problems with children.

That the Morgestraich be cancelled is almost unthinkable. Some have said they intend to go out and do it anyway. Thereupon it has now been not only cancelled but prohibited.

I’m a bit surprised that you find this a bad move doropfiz.

Isolating the spread of the virus is within all our best interests. Especially those more vulnerable. The rest of us don’t necessarily care about potential infections, and may need to be cooped-up in isolation at home for a couple of weeks in worst case.

Personally, I’m taking all precautions, and believe that current measures taken by Switzerland are absolutely correct:

In fairness I think you have misread what doropfiz said, ZuriRollt. The use of "unthinkable" I took to mean that the idea of Fasnacht being cancelled in Basel is just so alien - in spite of the very good reason.

....now to my bit.....

I participate with an "Alti Garde" clique - mostly chaps of a certain age. For them, the prospect of marching and being in the higher risk group with regard to outcomes of catching corona virus would not be the most sensible thing.

Naturally we are all disappointed it will not go ahead. Most cliques have new masks and costumes each year in line with their "sujet" and these are often tailor made and cost a few hundred per person. Also, the clique I am with organises meals, drink stops etc and we all pay into that via the club fund, plus we get a share of the pot from the sale of the Blaggedde (metal badges).

Me coming from Zurich to participate - I stay in a hotel. Thankfully the people at the hotel were nice enough to give me a refund due to the special circumstances otherwise it would be near on SFr700 down the pan.

Not just Fasnacht, also Basel World has been cancelled which will affect the turnover of local businesses not just in Basel, but I am aware that many visitors to Basel World stay in hotels as far afield as Zurich.

My clique already had meals planned for Fasnacht which are kind of tradition - the Wednesday one will still go ahead as a sort of compensation for the rest.

My impression from the emails going around the clique was people doing the right thing with regard to the corona problem and trying to make the best of the situation.

My guess is many cliques will keep their lanterns and costumes in storage for next year and just do the same sujet they planned for 2020.

For me - the situation is what it is. Nonetheless it still feels weird after all these years in Switzerland and being a participant in Fasnacht since 2006 that it does not go ahead.

Cheers
Nick

Re: Basler Fasnacht 2020

I have a request: that this thread is kept factual.

There is another Corona Virus EF thread, where people can have fun as much as they like.

Any German/French given links given here can be easily translated using your usual browser, or Google translate. Believe it or not, there are also EF members that read German and/or French/Italian speaking press to inform themselves, and have made their life here. Some over many years.

Could we keep this one informative?

I care about those “most vulnerable“, even it you don’t. And I’m very well aware what it means that the Basler Fastnacht cannot take place - it’s terrible. Especially for all those that prepared a year getting ready for it. My statement didn’t come easily.

I read that the same way.

I feel for all those of you who put in a phenomenal effort to put this on. I can liken this to cancelling the Lewes Bonfire here in Sussex. That is almost unthinkable as well.

I had booked a flight and hotel specifically for this. I probably wouldn't be able to get a refund so am coming over anyway. I'm sure that I will still have a good time anyway.

You're right, it is unthinkable. This only happened during the two world-wars and it will go into the history books of Basel

While in the second world war, they kind of rebelled by having drum-concerts at Theater Küchlin, this time I guess it is for real.
Although this is a tragedy for the people in Basel (and it is, even if most people will not be able to comprehend. My uncle would be devastated, were he still alive) I expect them to accept the ban this time.

I would not be surprised to hear loads of "Trummle und Pfiiffe" in the streets though and if it comes from their open windows at home.
And the already written "Schnitzelbänk" (political rimes) could be broadcasted via radio and the Fastnacht-website. I hope they think of this possibility as I will miss those.

Re: Basler Fasnacht 2020

What are you on about?

I find your post to be quite nasty in tone. I was just trying to give the picture from the point of view of the Fasnächtler.

The original post was Deep Purple wanting to know about the best way to experience Basel Fasnacht. You just saw fit to take the thread over.

All the doropfiz was trying to say is Basel Fasnacht not taking place is something extraordinary.

I think I figured out now why some long standing and valuable members left the forum for good.

I have been participating in Basel Fasnacht with a clique for 14 years. The clique I am with has been going since 1907. Unless you can prove you have a better knowledge of how Fasnacht works or of what is going though the heads of Fasnächtler right now, I suggest you go elsewhere.

In almost my first line I already hinted that members of my clique were acting responsibly given their advanced years and taking things with good grace.

I won’t hold my breath waiting for your apology.

You are right, I read her post in exactly the same way. There are many people however that don‘t read things the same way. I was one a walk with a completely switched on 76 year old that navigates the internet and i-phone like a Profi just this afternoon.

She still thinks that the risks are like a normal grippe. Doubt that she‘s the only one.

Did my bit, it was useless. People like you make me want to throw-up btw.

Bye.

Hi ZuriRollt,
nick did not write anything out of order IMO. As to the coronavirus thread, yes some stuff may be in jest but most of the contributions are very helpful. In this CV period - it is stressful but we are all in the same boat .
People have a right to post facts, humour, poems for all I care. Most of the humour has been to diffuse tensions (on and offline) and god we sure all need a bit of that now, no?
But accusing people of something they haven't done is also "false news"/spreadng of misinformation. call it what you will.
