1-2 week summer getaway in small/medium town in Switzerland with a 4 year old?

hello all,

looking for some ideas. my wife and i used to live in switzerland and are planning to head back for a visit with a 4 year old this summer for a 1-2 week stay where we would just like to rent an apartment and relax. We have an idea of what we're looking for but need help with some suggestions for specific locations for us to investigate.

Here are our thoughts:
- a small/medium-sized town
- not too touristy
- not too remote (able to get to other areas by rail for day trips)
- public outdoor swimming pools and playgrounds
- nice and scenic, good for strolls and visiting farms
- won't be doing a lot of rigorous outdoor sports
- not big on restaurants, will be mostly eating at home (ie. access to coop/migros,etc)
- Region: generally open, but were leaning towards either the bern, valais, graubunden regions

Places that we've already crossed off of our list:
Fribourg - nice place, but too big of town/city for what we're looking for
Abelboden - about the right size and feel for what we're looking for but we have already been there
Lauterbrunnen/Murren/Wengen - amazing but a bit too touristy
Rougemot - nice area and size but didn't see there was much to do for kids.

Places that we're considering:
Bern region - Kandersteg, Zweisimmen
Valais region - salvan?
Graubunden - ????

open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks

This is in Tessin. The advantage is that in Summer it is dependably nice weather which one cannot say if you go to the northern side of the mountains. River bathing is great there

The Jura area of Baselland is great for walking, with some stunning scenery. And there are some very pretty towns around.

This place is really great for children. They have chalets to rent but one must book early.

Zweisimmen is a bit of the hub that connects some places, so if you want that's ok, but a lot more scenic areas close by. I would suggest Lenk over Zweisimmen for a number of reasons. Overall better and more facilities and less traffic, more scenic walks, kid oriented. But if you've done Adelboden, it is quite similar. Can give more specific details if you want.

Re: 1-2 week summer getaway in small/medium town in Switzerland with a 4 year old?

thanks for the tips so far. Lenk seems like a good suggestion.

We'll around in beginning of July. As far as weather. We're somewhat ambivalent about the occasional rain or cloudy days. We don't plan to out and about everyday. Being somewhere that's relatively accessible to get into a larger town or city to check out a museum would give us options in case it's not a great day to go to the pool or for a walk.

So, north of the mountains would be OK.

As far as south of the mountains, We weren't really looking at Ticino since it has a different feel than what we were going for and also we didn't see as many towns with public swimming pools.

Places in the valais/vaud region might be sunnier. We're less familiar with that area so would be open to suggestions there.

Like everywhere one can have good or bad luck with the wetter. But Tessin I find is really great in Summer. It can also get some bad weather sometimes in Summer but its quickly over. I always go to Maggiatal and its 10 min with a regular bus to Locarno. In July its really crowded-day trippers from Zurich. But I can really recommend Picollo Paradiso. This valley is a real paradise.

Interlaken, surely!!

Ok its quite touristy. But its really in the middle of, well 2 lakes. And plenty to do there. Many sites and cities could be reached quickly, the nature, the pools etc.

Tichino is another good shout. Its beautiful there, but is very much an Italian feel, so for Tichino you could go to Italy for the same thing but cheaper.

Yes you could go to Italy. But then you are not in Tessin and you dont have the great places in Tessin like Versachatal or Macchiatal

Schwarzsee, Fribourg. Lovely little lake, lots of easy walks, lots to do for a little one. Close enough to Lausanne, Papillorama for daytrips. We stayed there last summer with teens, loved it. Very relaxed and not overrun.

Most towns in Ticino have public pools, particularly those near the lakes.

Cevio has a large public pool, as well as a natural pool with one of the best waterfalls.

Close to Locarno, etc. The place omtatstat suggested is 15 minutes away.

We went to one of these places when our son was younger. There are activities laid on plus there is often a kidís club to take advantage of.
