Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

Always got space here in the meadow- for a tent or two, with mountains, lake, pools, moutain biking, cycling- in both French and Swiss Jura. Access to WCs, hot and cold water, a very large dry room and equipped kitchen.

Firstly, regarding this post. What happened to Odile? I thought it was very kind of her to make above offer and though I didn't know her well I thought her posts were informative, likeable, etc?

So far then as an update for UK campsites there is no update because shared facilities are riskier, everything else holiday-related will be July 4 opening... anyone have an idea when they will decide on UK campsÔtes?

I was also going to say that I was out with family last week in the motorhome in Germany and it was great for the children's mental-health post-lockdown. I really couldn't think of anything better for them considering much of the family with a lot of other children were there too.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

Italy in my opinion is still so risky to go to also but I do know our favorite camp ground in Italy is Union lido. My three daughters love that place and we would have went back this year if it wasnít for the virus. It is a 5 star camp ground right next to the beach. It is very fun at this place and they have so much to do. I do know they are accepting visitors now because I follow them on Facebook. Could still be risky to go though. We are planning on going back next year for 2 weeks and plan on renting one of the villas they have.

As for this year we donít have anything planned. We will try to do some traveling around here and maybe go to the zoo, coneyland, and a few places that are children friendly.

We were planning to do that this year - at a different campsite in Italy.

We decided not to as presently best case, having markers laid out on the beach, having to book restaurants and wear face masks at least some of the time would not be conducive to a fun family holiday. At worst, a second wave could scupper pans completely.

I know from experience that anything contagious spreads through campsites really quickly too.

Full marks to booking.com and the campsite to allow us to move the booking to next year at no extra cost rather than losing the hefty deposit for this year.

Do you mind elaborating on that? What kind of things might we catch on campsites?

Euro camping is the antithesis of social distancing. The WC/shower facilities are pretty clean at many campgrounds but the sheer number of users (predominantly white trash Dutch and Germans) makes them breeding grounds for you-name-it.

Same sort of things that you'd catch on cruise ships - and if it's about - that includes COVID-19.

Anything infectious.

Not necessarily an STD.

It's just the nature of the beast, having shared bathrooms for possibly hundreds of people.

As I said, your best option is probably to go North in a camper and book a hotel every now and then for a couple of days to shower etc.
I think Norway also still allows "wild camping" outside camp-grounds.

I would also consider adding a 14 day self-quarantine buffer to the end of your holiday, just in case. If you can't work from home 100% anyway.

It looks like most infections are now rather mild - but nobody can guarantee that it will be the case for you or your spouse or your kids.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

My 5 cents, one would have to be crazy to go camping this summer. Everywhere is going to be rammed full of people that panic booked during the lockdown. The borders are open again! France and Italy are begging for tourists and there's LOADS of offers available online. Spain and Greece opening up too (however that means a flight). Surprise yourself and get a last minute deal!

Not sure about that because:

1. noone was able to book anything during the lockdown, partly due to the fact that campsites didn’t know when they can open, in the UK that is still the case.

2. ...so far, many thought there would/will be a rush where they have opened in the EU but in many cases it didn’t happen. It could be that families with young children have to plan more and also won’t take any risks. I know for a fact that in Germany some that have reopened have clear policies on websites that toilets and showers will be closed, you therefore have to use your own if you have them.
If not (VW campers don’t have these), you can’t use the site.

If UK remains complicated it will be rainer_d‘s suggestion I think.

We normally go camping anyways, kids love it. We booked back in January for July..

Unfortunately I agree that it'll probably be rammed.. We usually go many weekends through summer plus a longer break somewhere.. All of the places we normally go are fully booked..

One glimmer of hope is that many of these showing as fully booked are actually not, they are blocked to avoid bookings..

It could go either way .. Many people will be first time campers and hate it and leave Or they might spoil it for everybody else.. Thinking they are in their usual 5 star holiday resort

We don't normally spend the whole time on the campsite, it's base to go explore a bit.

Mainly viral gastroenteritis but that wasn't really my point.

The point I was trying to make is these viruses have the same transmission route as COVID-19 and with shared sanitary facilities, shopping, swimming and recreational activities in and around campsites, there probably isn't a better way to spread any cases that may occur -especially for a two-week holiday.

If the alternative is drilling holes in your knee caps then yes, camping is a better alternative.. otherwise no.

That's really a shame. I always really, really liked Odile... and her posts. I hope all is okay with her and that nothing bad happened to cause her to delete.

Hopefully she's enjoying a nice long break from all the noise and enjoying the summer.

Well, living in one of the touristic parts of Germany popular with campers: wrong. I havenít seen the camp grounds as overflowing as this year. Probably because people werenít able to book Mallorca and similar... so they rented RVs and go wherever they are allowed to.

I personally would never do that sort of camping. Most certainly not this year.

The small problem is that Norway closed its borders and wonít let anyone in till late August (except of Danish and Finish neighbors... no Swedes though)
