Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

I am just undoing all the bookings including flights, hotels, day trips, transfers, etc for our 3 week holiday in the USA due to coronavirus as I am not comfortable putting my family through the risk of catching something even though I know it might not be so critical in 3 months time.

I would dread to think if one (or more) of us got sick when we arrived (given that we must travel through airports and stay in hotels and in LA where we had booked), and all the stress of not being able to get back easily if any of us caught the virus.

The alternative could be camping considering I have the option of having use of a motorhome. Easy to keep a distance (if necessary) from others, own isolated sleeping accommodation, no public transportation required and plenty of options by land on this continent.

Looking a bit ahead whilst in quarantine also has the added benefit of lifting spirits, especially for the children, and although I wouldn't consider myself the camping type, I think we could go to many places like Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Poland and even South of France, Portugal, Brittany, (anywhere!) without the obvious difficulties that will still exist of a post-corona situation.

My partner also works in health so that is another factor as it has been quite stressful on her side. Does anyone on here think that ferries would be a problem too in 3 months as we could then consider Ireland, Scotland, etc?

The truth is unfortunately that nobody knows.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

My own personal belief is that summer holidays 2020 are to be scrapped.

The issue I see is that the Covid thing is not going away. Sure the rate of contagiousness may slow down but I don't believe in 3 months time life will be back to normal.

A lot of businesses will never recover, who knows which planes will fly etc.

So I am already thinking of no vacation this summer but stay home.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

We're booked for a campsite in DE near Lake Constance for July .. I think it will go ahead..

However our other booked campings in FR for May I think are toast.

Recently bought one of those inflatable tents .. Just got it out today to try it, planned to camp in the garden tonight.. fuk fuk fuk, it didn't come with a pump and the pump for my paddle board doesn't fit it.. I've made an attachment from plastic and glue and lots of dremmeling .. Fingers crossed it'll work when the glue dries.

I agree, we cancelled 6 foreign trips and only have one booking in Danmark in the end of July left (legoland for the kids 4th birthday), but starting to doubt if that be possible, it would require his Swedish grandparents to travel there and Legoland has to be open. And tbh, I fear if stuff is open in summer all be busy as hell, we can do without such since the virus for certain is not gone in summer.

Surely more stores, workplaces and such will be open by then, but allowing millions of people unrestricted travelling for recreational purposes.. not going to happen soon.

I had that in mind too, whether it might also be a moral obligation to restrict our own expeditions, also given that in some places many will be dealing with bereavement and not take kindly to visitors so soon. A lot to think about really.

I would take the motorhome if I was you - road trips make more fun anyway!

Yup,

If I'm going somewhere on a holiday, I also like to go to a local bar and have some drink and chat with the locals, or visit a local concert without any worries. Will be some time before that be possible.

I think so too, and get the earliest ferries with fewer people as Dublin is no.1 destination for my partner.

I so very, very much hope you are right, and that at least for this summer, this aspect will remain at least partially restricted.

...but as I said, as long as people are thoughtful holiday is essential, especially for those who are working now for us in essential services. Perhaps prioritize those on the frontline as part of lifting of the lockdown. I definitely would hold back if requested.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

Now the EC President, Ursula von der Leyen, is advising people not to book summer holidays! See below
https://www.handelszeitung.ch/news/v...n-fur-verfruht

And then we have these echoes of accepting vouchers instead of asking for refunds, in the event of cancellations. Although the customers have a right to a refund, now the EC President is advocating that we accept a voucher instead. So those who have not booked anything should probably stay put, if they don’t want to lock in their money!

Speaking from the pov of someone who cancelled 3 unique life trips unlikely to happen ever again, I would suggest to you to postpone Legoland too for the reasons you have described AND because the kids will enjoy it more and remember it when they are older There may be still height restrictions etc for 4 years old so putting it all together just postpone.

Kids also will likely not care - when I announced all our holiday cancellation with tears in my eyes they just went "Yipieee staycation" (facepalm)

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

More than anything, we want to be with family in Greece, but as the primary purpose would be to visit 3 relatives who are 88, 90 and 92, I'm extremely wary. Even Kyria Athena, who owns our favourite little holiday bolt hole on Crete, is in her 80s. We've talked about visiting but would probably have to do a 3 week trip so that we could self-isolate upon arrival before seeing family. There's too many unknowns at present.

Oh the kid will not care if he is in our garden or in Legoland we did not cancel it yet since we have an arrangement from the park which we can easily postpone in 2,5 months from now, by then we should know more. If I postpone now I'd have no clue what the new desired dates would be.

Well, that's a great arrangement because everything should be clear by then. I also realised that it's also quite important to look at the state of minds of our children and given all the restrictions we're under, to leave much of the summer open. They are the ones most affected and I notice in the last week that they get a bit crazy, my solution would be to have them have a good say in our quarantine exit strategy, where they would like to go and how, boat, tunnel, north, south, etc. Even if we just stay in good old Schweiz, which I feel now is not a bad idea.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. Kids are resilient but some will be quite fragile after all this. Our children, for example, were very upset about not visiting grandparents and cousins for Easter, and missing out on big family gatherings. I think we may just drive to the grandparents and spend summer there, and cancel the summer holiday, which we have booked already. New experiences will just have to wait!

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

If the pandemic is still a big problem this summer, with many restrictions still in place, I suspect that many or most campgrounds will be closed since people there usually have to share toilet and shower areas, etc. I know that some motor homes and campers have their own toilets, etc. though. But those who camp with tents (as we do), have to use the shared facilities. Fingers crossed this will all be over with come July. It's seems so difficult to really have any idea as to how and when this is all going to come to an end.

Re: Is camping the best alternative summer holiday now in 2020?

The problem with camping will be that literally everybody with a valid driving-license will want to rent a camper come Summer.

All the camp-grounds will be packed to capacity.

You can't drive to Canada, from here ;-)

Your best bet might be Norway or Sweden, the more to the North, the better. But it will be cold.
