West Switzerland Vacation Ideas Please

Hello All,

Looking for recommendations on where to go for a vacation week at the beginning of September. We would like to go to the western part of the country for the first time, and don't know much at all about the area.

We would prefer being in/near peaky mountains for views as well as hiking, rather than flatter places (eg not Glarus-like). Ideally we could find accommodations in a very small hotel or more private space, since we are hoping to remain Covid-free. We are big foodies and would really appreciate several great quality restaurants nearby. We also are looking for a calm and relaxing atmosphere, beauty and peace.

A perfect day would be a 4 hour hike, followed by a few hours relaxing on a terrace with a breath-taking view, then a completely memorable dinner.

Any and all ideas welcome! Thank you very much.

I spent a few days at the National in Champery.. Great little hotel, great views, very relaxing, mountains outside.. Good food and friendly resto nearby - by my standards at least, at La Farinet

Maybe not west enough?

Villars Diablerets is a nice area with everything from salt mines (Bex) which are great on a too hot day to the suspension bridge between two 3,000M peaks (Take a parka).

Re: West Switzerland Vacation Ideas Please

Come to Chalet Beauroc, Morgins. Walking, cycling, tennis, swimming, horse riding and loads of other activities literally a stone's throw from our chalet. Really up in the mountains, with fabulous views all round, including:

We have two apartments, shortly will add two small studios, to rent within the chalet, each with private bathroom and kitchen. Some details on our new, but so far very basic, website https://chaletbeauroc.com/ - contact me for more info if you need it.

Ideas for Accommodation in Western Valais?

With the assistance provided by an earlier thread (my thanks to all previous responders!), my husband and I have narrowed down our planning for an upcoming week-long vacation in early September. We hope to spend the time rejuvenating in western Valais. The mountains there seem just amazing for day hikes and there are many delightful-looking foodie meals available.

We have spent two days looking at specific towns and villages to sleep in, and are getting completely confused !

Can anyone recommend small accommodations we could look into, that:
-- will be higher up with great mountain views
-- will provide a relaxing and romantic atmosphere, good to spend a day lounging at when the weather proves poorly or the legs prove sorely
-- will be within 30 minutes or so drive of several gourmet restaurants (a shorter drive would be much more preferable)
-- hotel, BnB, apartment, chalet, lodge would all be fine, as long as it is not crowded. We do hope to easily maintain social distancing, etc.

Thanks so much for all your help!
Upa

I can only give specific info for Morgins, but to address your points in turn:

At 1350m, that certainly applies. We can't actually see the spectacular Dents du Midi from our location in the village, but it's just a short walk to places where you can, and there's mountains in every direction you look.

I'm guessing ours, while it meets those criteria, are probably bigger than you want. Sadly there's not a lot else in the village, one B&B, the Cergnat, nice enough but not a lot of relaxing space inside, just a small lounge area and your room; then Chez Jan, which TBH I don't know much about, but is more by way of being a boutique hotel/restaurant from what I can see, with prices to match, and the rather ordinary but modern Hotel Helvetica.

Lots more accommodation a couple of km across the border in Châtel, of course...

A couple in the village, the Di Vins, just a couple of minutes from our chalet and certainly one I recommend, and the Point Gourmand, whose extensive (and expensive) exotic menus rather put off my wife in particular, so we've never eaten there. Several other decent restaurants as well, but only those two could be deserving of the "Gourmet" description.

Again, in Châtel and just beyond there's many more, and I particularly recommend L'Atelier de Jacky in Abondance. About ten km, max fifteen minutes drive away.

Ovronnaz or Saillon if you want a spa.

Anzere near Crans-Montana is a hidden gem that fits the stated requirements. Western Valais, plenty of hiking possibilities and incredible views.
We happen to own an apartment there, right in the center of the ski village which is a cozy pedestrian zone. You can rent it, check it out:

Crans and Anzère are hardly in Western Valais though.

Not western Valais... but how about Zermatt? Right in the mountains. Loads of hiking on the doorstep. Definitely loads of gourmet restaurants on the doorstep. Most hotels have spas etc for a bad weather day.

Zermatt is my recommendation as well if you want mountains, views, hiking good food, and spa facilities. It's not cheap, but there are very good reasons it is such a popular destination. Every time I visit I am completely wowed all over again.

Re: Ideas for Accommodation in Western Valais?

We are all different- Zermatt is far too touristy (and therefore expensive) for me - give me some of the smaller places, like Anzère (mid Valais) or Morgins, Les Marécottes, or Ovronnaz for the spa any day. Not Zermatt and not Verbier. Perhaps Nendaz with access to super Nendaz- or the Val d'Hérens, Arolla, Les Haudères, Evolène- for that Heidi feel.
