Driving from Geneva to Ticino - best route

What is the best route to drive from Geneva to Ticino? I see two routes.

Drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and then across Northern Italy. This route is shorter, but has almost 100€ in tolls

Drive through Valais and then through the Gotthard Tunnel. This is longer by about an hour.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don’t think you will find the Gotthard Tunnel in Valais. The route via the Simplon Tunnel will take you in and out of Italy but is probably the best route.

Considering Geneva Bellinzona:

Drive over the Passo Novena/Nufenen (most economic)
Drive over the Furka/Gotthard (if you like passes)
Drive under Furka and under Gotthard (the Snow route of the above)
Drive over Simplon and through Cento Valli (shortest)
Drive under Simplon and through Cento Valli
Drive via Bern Luzern on Swiss highways (fastest)
Drive under Mt. Blanc (most expensive)
Drive over Great St. Bernhard and through Aosta valley (takes the longest)

Re: Driving from Geneva to Ticino - best route

geneva - simplon pass - locarno or nufenenpass depending on the destination.
I also suggest to consider timing and day of the week, the northern motorway route + gotthard will not be convenient at all on Friday at 5 p.m. Also this weekend it might snow, check beforehand if passes have been closed.
If you go to the south (Lugano), probably the Mont Blanc is better but I don't have experience.

Re: Driving from Geneva to Ticino - best route

Back when I was regulary travelling from Lugano to Valais (Leuk), Novena was fastest.

But to Lausanne/Geneva, highway is fastest.

Re: Driving from Geneva to Ticino - best route

I’m claustrophobic and hates driving through tunnels, so I normally choose the pass if there’s one available.

To go to Ticino I usually take the Nufenen pass. Simplon pass is nice, but the Cento Valli can be a bit difficult of you’re not used to driving on tight mountain roads.

Just make sure you know the conditions on the passes, I would not be surprised at wintery conditions.

Thanks everyone. The Simplon Tunnel requires using a car carrier train, right? That might be a fun experience for the kids.

The Nufenen pass is what Google Maps is showing. What is the best way to check the conditions of the mountain passes?

Re: Driving from Geneva to Ticino - best route

The car carrier is an option, but not mandatory. But if the pass closes due to weather, it becomes the only realistic option. More information on the car carrier here.

And remember to avoid Liguria, as they are on the quarantine list as of tomorrow!

Looks like Nufenen Pass is currently closed but that can change quickly.

The tunnel yes, but the pass no. It’s an easy road.

It’s usually one of the first to close in winter as the top is quite high and the road very sinewy toward the top.

1. The tunnel is a rickety ride. Depending on how adventurous your kids are, they might like it. Not great if you're claustrophobic.

2. Check on conditions of alpine passes here. https://alpen-paesse.ch/en/
