Glacier 3000 experiences

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of trying out the famous Glacier 3000 excursion this year and was wondering if anyone has some stories or experiences to share?

For an example, is it really that weather dependent where they will stop the excursion for the day if some slight rain comes down? It would be bad news if you take a long trip there only to be denied entry.

And how's with the tourists? Is it heavily packed usually? Typical horde of middle-aged Chinese people or more international adventurous crowd?

Thanks!

I've not been to Glacier 3000, but generally they close the lifts if it is very windy for safety reasons. If it was snowing or raining only, it would be open..... but you won't see anything if its grey and cloudy so what's the point? Check the weather and go on a sunny non windy day.

Re: Glacier 3000 experiences

and 2020 is VERY different- you won't find groups of ageing Chinese/Asians/Americans/Brits anywhere at the moment for obvious reasons.

Yes, I guess you've never been there

Indeed they will close it for bad weather even if its just snowing....

It's very exposed, especially the trajet over to the main part, so they do close it much more frequently, and even just for snow. I've had to get back to the téléphérique on quick notice due to zero visibility when they close things which happens quite a lot compared to lower resorts. And that is one place where you can't really ski with no visibility, the consequences are great. No trees, very few if any natural markers. It's the one place in CH I've been rescued by a snowmobile as they wanted to clear the pistes fast due to bad weather /no visibility. Keep in mind high winds are common and come up quick, it is also a main reason for closing the place, including the main téléphérique.

I was not sure if OP was talking about skiing or just going up as a tourist for the views. Winter ski season started up there about a week ago. I skiied a week ago at a nearby resort at about 2,000 m that was open for summer walkers.

No, but I've spent more hours than I care to think about on Klein Matterhorn... which I'm fairly certain is more exposed and gets much worse weather. They'll open up there unless it really isn't possible to run the lifts (and if the lift isn't running you definitely don't want to be up there). That said, Zermatt will do anything to keep the cash coming in Maybe Glacier 3000 aren't so money grabbing
