Transit through Germany in Covid times

I’m planning to drive to NL via Germany, but I’m a little puzzled by all the Covid related regulations on the website of the BMI.

How I understand it, I am currently allowed to transit through Germany, even for non-urgent reasons. However, I have heard from others everyone’s stopped at the German border and some even have their passports taken pictures of (Basel Autobahn crossing).

Anyone has any recent experiences entering Germany by car?

I’ve tried to cross to konstanz to get some Amazon stuff at the address that I have there and I was stopped by the German police and sweetly requested to return to Switzerland.

They took photo of my car and identity.

I don’t recommend the experience....

Amazing, one seems to be at mercy of the border agent. The rules do not state you are not allowed to enter from the Schengen zone, but the picture taking stories worry me.

What regulation did the border guard give you for turning back? One is still allowed into Baden-Württemberg for 24 hours for shopping? Same rule still applies for Germans coming here or shopping in France.

Re: Transit through Germany in Covid times

We did the trip CH-NL just last weekend, and we were also stopped and questioned about our reason for entering DE. But we were allowed to go through, with the usual reminder that we should not stop in DE for longer than is required. Mind you, our trip was before the DE & NL lockdowns were announced.

I guess the controls are only getting more strict, as we get closer to Christmas.

What reason did you give for your trip? Anything they consider as urgent?

Depends on the canton where one lives, OP is from Zug.

We simply said we were going to NL to be with OH’s father for Christmas, as he lives on his own. And that we are leaving early because we have to be in a 10-days quarantine.

We crossed the border just hours before the German Bundesregierung announced the lockdown, so perhaps they were not so strict then. But the Zoll was stopping every Swiss car ans asking them the purpose of their visit. But no one was stopped from entering DE, nor was anyone photographed.

Good luck for your trip.

Many of the crossings have cameras, you just can’t see them. I think they are trying to send you a subtle message “You’ve been warned”.

I’d suggest you have full tank of Petrol/Gas and have food in the car. Tell them you will not stop in Germany and are travelling the most direct route.

Re: Transit through Germany in Covid times

I crossed the border this morning. There wasn’t anyone. Guess they’re only interested in border shoppers.
