1 week in summer - itinerary

Hi,

My parents are looking to visit me here in Switzerland in the late Summer - perhaps August or September, covid-depending of course.

I've been living in Switzerland for a while now so I have a good idea of what is popular and how things work, but I could use some input into a potential itinerary. They (and me too) generally prefer outdoors type things, but I also don't want it to be too tiring either, so some relaxing days would be nice. They've both been to Lauterbrunnen and Luzern before, but only on day trips.

We'd start and end in Zurich, and probably go from Saturday to the following Saturday. I was very roughly thinking of something like this:

Somewhat textbook 1-week itinerary

Saturday: Early morning train from Zurich to Ticino (Lugano or Locarno). Hopefully arrive before lunch, so would have most of the day there

Sun: Day in Locarno/Lugano

Mon: Train to Zermatt

Tues: Day in Zermatt

Wed: Up to Bern (leave after lunch)

Thurs: Bern in the morning/afternoon and a train to one of the towns along Lake Geneva, to be there by dinnertime

Fri: Lake Geneva

Sat: Back to Zurich in the late evening

That was my general plan, but I really want to be sure that it's not too rushed. I originally was going to not bother with Zermatt, but it seems to come so well recommended, that we'd be foolish not to squeeze it in (and the train from Locarno to there is meant to be very nice too?).

Before I started reading other itineraries, I had something quite different, which would've been something like:

Slightly different, based on what I've seen and know is nice

Saturday: Early morning train from Zurich to Walensee

Sun: Day at Walensee

Mon: Train to Lake Luzern (perhaps Brunnen or somewhere?)

Tues: Day at Lake Luzern, boat to the city, etc.

Wed: Train to Ticino (Lugano or Locarno).
Thurs: Day in Lugano / Locarno
Fri: Back to Zurich

Sat: Day relaxing in Zurich

This second one is more relaxed, and perhaps nicer for someone like me who has been living here for a while and could go to Zermatt any time they want really. But maybe for visitors, the first one is better?

I'm rambling now, so I'll leave this here and would accept any advice/suggestions/comments/etc.

Thanks!

Re: 1 week in summer - itinerary

Do your parents have only one week in Switzerland, total, or is it that you have one week available to travel with them, while they have some days before and after that, in Zurich?

I ask because there are lovely things to do and see in and around, or closer to, Zurich, in case you/they are looking for more restful options.

If they have only one week, and if you decide to travel around the country, then yes, I'd agree with you that it's better to leave out Zermatt.

They're in on Friday and leaving Sunday, so although we technically could extend the time we have away from Zurich by getting a train out on the Friday they arrive, I'd rather have the two 'flying' days completely free to relax a bit.

They're not that old at all (early 60s), so getting around will be no problem. I just know, from my own experience, that trying to do too much ends up getting tiring and not very enjoyable. I'm thinking 3 'bases' over the 7-8 days should be a good amount, so perhaps 3 from: Ticino, Lake Geneva, 'mountain village/town', Bernese Oberland, Lake Luzern.

Though I would be interested in general about these things in/around Zurich - even just for myself. I know the Rhine falls, Rapperswil, and a few others like that, but I'm always open to more places to see!

If you are going to Locarno, consider visiting the Brissago island. It is considered one of the Swiss delicacies.

Hi Imagine and Parents

When you are on one of the lakes ( Züri, Vierwald, Genf ), how about boat cruise with a meal or fondue ? While just sit and gently watch the world float by.
For a more adventurous trip, how about a 2 day walk to a SAC hut, and an overnight stay. Pick a more luxurious hut, eg LeglerHutte, which is within easy achievable walking distance. Main point is to enjoy the mountain views and landscape from close up, not a stressful march.
Hope Covid is clear by summer, enjoy your week.

On lake Geneva there is a paddle steamer that leaves Vevey around noon, with a lunch served. You travel via Montreux and St. Gingolph before coming back to Vevey. Charlie Chaplin museum in Vevey.

Thanks for that Dragon. I had certainly considered a boat trip - my initial thought was on Vierwaldstattersee, but we'll see.

That hut idea could be quite cool too, and something I hadn't considered. Thanks

Sounds pretty good, thanks.

Depending on the weather you could take a boat to Rapperswil, walk around in the city, go for a swim and then take to train to Einsiedeln. Nice town and cathedral. And there is also the option for a stroll along the Sihlsee.
