Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

Hi all!

We live in Geneva and are planning on doing our first skiing day trip this weekend. Which Swiss resorts would you recommend as good options for a day trip via train (or mobility car)? We’ve been further afield, but not sure which are the great resorts close by!

Thanks!

I'd head to Villars- train to Aigle, then train right up to Bretaye at top of resort. You can even stay at the Hôtel du Lac in Bretaye- ski in, ski out- British owned and managed- restaurant open for Hôtel Guests.

To get to Villars by train you have to change trains at Bex, not at Aigle. From Aigle you can only take a bus to Villars (it may work out quicker, check the timetables)

Otherwise there's Leysin which is closer and reacheable from Aigle by train, but Villars has a wider ski area. What is your skiing level?

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

thanks dandi- and sorry for my mistake. But from Villars, you can take the cog train up to the top of the resort. But yes, easy to change in Bex. And you are right, you can take the train to Leysin. The area is quite extensive and varied enough for a week-end.

Leysin Lodges are right on the piste- ski in, ski out- they take you up by skidoo. Sleep 4 to 6.

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

And to complete the list, from Geneva the closest by train may be St Cergue (via Nyon) but with only 2-3 small slopes. Otherwise you can also get by train to Champery (swiss side of Portes de Soleil is open), Les Marecottes (via Martigny) or of course, to Verbier

All these have good snow at the moment - but vary widely in terms of size and facilities

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

Thanks for the good suggestions, we’re actually going to Villars next weekend to stay for two nights!

Might you have other recommendations? I would say we are intermediates!

We’ve been to places like Verbier and Wengen, but don’t know the best nearby resorts to go to once you actually live in Geneva / Switzerland!

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

Will you be staying at Hôtel du Lac, or down in the resort?

Verbier is easy to reach by train, to the lower station of Le Châble. And as said before, Leysin which has a great revolving restaurant at the top.

For Portes du Soleil, the quickest if via Aigle, then bus up to Torgon via Vionnaz- and from there you can access a huge area both on French and Swiss side- but you will have to wait for the French Sector to open to make the best of it.

Can someone here remind us how to get to Morgins by public transport from Geneva/lausanne please. I hear http://chaletbeauroc.com/ is very nice and convenient for the pistes, English spoken. Checked- train to Aigle, change to Troistorrent then bus to Morgins.

I love Leysins and totally recommend the Leysin lodges to stay .. Simple self catering, friendly owners, great for kids ..

However I've never yet worked out how to 'ski in' .. Unless it counts as ski back down to the end of the baby piste, take the magic carpet up and walk back up the last 200m to the lodge.

Haute-Nendaz is great, you can even stay at a hotel for a night. But it is around 2.5 hrs by train from GVA

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

I think beyond Verbier in Valais is getting outside the "day trip" area from Geneva - i.e. ending up spending more time traveling than on the slopes.

You can ski in the Nendaz/Veysonnaz/Siviez areas from Verbier via the 4valees pass (I would recommend it actually instead of sticking to Verbier only)

Should France re-open its resorts, there are closer options from Geneva on the other side of the border - Flaine, Megeve, Contamines, Chamonix...

La Clusaz and Morzine being the closest, I think.

I have not stayed there, but when we were in Leysins in the autumn, from the cablecar we looked at what accom. would be ski in, and ski out. And the Lodges looked perfect. We read about it and their website said they take you up with Skidoo. Surely, from there you can ski down to the cablecar, and then ski straight in on your last run down? BTW, if there are two of you - out of main season, they will do a discount (I asked).

Otherwise the Hôtel BelAir- is right next to the Gondola. We stayed in a really nice apartment at Le Castel lower down - and they provide a free shuttle up and down from Gondola at pre-arranged hours.

We have not skied in Leysins since the 70s and the heady, hippy days of Club Vagabond- now that was something else, lol. Chris Bonnington and all were regularls.

St Jean d'Aulps / la Grande Terche is closer still. Lovely little ski area with its own purpose-built village. Technically a part of the PdS, but not connected on snow.

Le Grand Bornand too, say our friends who live just behind the Salève, near Pers Jussy.

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

On Swiss side, part of the 4 Vallées- you can get to Thyon, or Veysonnaz.

At Thyon 2000- you can rent studios and apartments with parking underneath. The small resort has shops, ski hire, ski school and several restaurants (now closed or take out only, not sure). 100% ski in, ski out, and with a swimming pool, indoor heated. Or La Cambuse Hôtel-Restaurant, right below Thyon 2000 and with the Poma ski lift up right at the side.

Yes, no good for day trip- but for week-end, especially if you travel on Friday after work.

Would love to know how you got on. I am looking for similar, not too far from Geneva, and am interested in lessons too. I would say that I am a nervous intermediate! I will be travelling by train and schlepping my skis with me. Grateful for any updates and any info on good ski instructors - group lessons would be good but not averse to 121 as long as they are not ridiculously priced. Just need to get my ski legs back!

Villars has a really good / big ESS ski school .. They cater to all needs.. We've had good experience with them with the kids and also me, I like to take a refresher each year..

Leysin has ESS too but there I also like 'Leysin Ski' instructors, couple of private individuals who live there and know the area super well.. Not cheap but really good private lessons. Even if you just want a guide for a couple of hours and some pointers.

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

We ended up going snowshoeing for the day in La Givrine, which was really cool.

Went to Villars the subsequent weekend - it was super easy to get to, 2 hours door to door (1 change to a Bus at Aigle). If you were going for the day, I think you can even get a more direct route to the slopes by taking the mountain train direct to Bretaye (which is one of the main mountain bases). The resort is great for beginners and those who want an easy cruise around the slopes and explore. There’s a really big ski school setup as well (would just google it). Really enjoyed it and plan to go back again.

Re: Skiing Day Trip in Swiss Resorts near Geneva

Glad you enjoyed it. The best views of the Alps are always from the top of the Jura, on a good day. From Les Rasses/Chasseron, or from the top of Métabief/Mt d'Or on French side.

BTW the Hôtel du Lac in Bretaye, ski in, ski out- is English owned and managed, by James and his wife. Lovely rooms, great food- and at night- just nothing else and amazing views.
