When someone equates getting in your own car, driving a few kms to a supermarket off peak times, putting a mask on, disinfecting- doing quick shop, disinfecting again, washing hands when getting home- to a holiday in Mexico- I think they have lost the plot.
I think the point is that it was you who was condemning others whose decision-making process didn't accord with your own, so you have to accept that it works both ways. On the scale of travelling abroad your (and my) shopping trips across the border may be very low down, but they are still on that same scale that includes your family reunion trip and someone else's hypothetical holiday to Cancun.

Other people have just as much, or more importantly just as little, right to judge your decisions about international travel as you have of theirs.

Susie, we have just cancelled a special trip to Umbria and Tuscany- for the reasons stated. We were driving over, self catering apartments- but even so, not my idea of fun. Have re-booked for September and let's hope.
Hope you can make it - actually plan to be in Umbria for a wedding in September. Fingers very much crossed, especially for the couple who already had to cancel their wedding last year...

Just think about what you will do if you test positive when you take your PCR to return...hope you have insurance that pays for your quarantine! Tourists have been stranded in Mexico recently.
I'm traveling on 2 months. If I have a positive PCR on return.....I stay a few more days with the family that already had covid and the vaccine. Horrible, miserable days.

Ace, yes of course- goes both ways, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Have you read the info on Mexico?

I am not concerned for myself- but I am very concerned about taking Covid elsewhere, and bringing it back. And no, NO comparison- imo- at all.
You disagree? So be it.

So then why do you feel it OK to travel to a foreign country to save a few franks?

The mind boggles.

I don’t suppose they factored in a potential global pandemic when they originally set the date, it certainly wouldn’t have been the first thing that sprung to my mind.

USA are advising against travel to 80% of countries, including, UK and Switzerland.

Mexico 14 days figures are 43.27 .... Switzerland 372! https://covid.observer/mx/
I'd rather live my life than sit on my backside waiting to die

Besides, that's only applicable to US residents.

I'd rather be in Mexico than Uri, frankly

Won't open the borders to tourists? In or out? That's weird.
They have not even let Australians repatriate let alone tourists in!

I cannot imagine a country that does this....

I have to say I don't understand how so many people are stranded. I have an Aussie relative who has flown in and out 3 times in the last year, no issues

I wonder how it feels to be a 0.27 person.
Or if it's percentage does that mean that 372% of the Swiss population is infected?
Or is this just an apple/pear thing here.

Well, the basic line is: If everybody did what they're told and bloody well staid at home, I could live freely as I'm entitled to.
She's not the only one who talks that way.

43.27 and 372 people per 100,000 population (average over last 14 days). A way of comparing countries infection levels, with different populations. Used for setting quarantine country list. So Switzerland has almost 9x the infection rate of Mexico. (And France, where one might go shopping, is 16 times higher than Mexico).

Re: Holidays abroad during Covid

Enjoy your holiday, IM, and let me know how the service on the Edelweiss flight is.

Given the vacation zone has about 10-15% occupancy and have implemented some excellent controls that they got together, thought of and brought into being that are better than here, I think you'll be OK. Even down to the free antigen tests at the hotel and availability at the airport for testing.

In the end, risk is about managing that risk to a level you can accept and within any laws and regulations. I'd rather fly than be in a packed train right now and I am not that worried about that either. I've had enough tests to see it being a routine thing with more advantages than disadvantages.

Not a fan of Cancun per se but I do like that region of Mexico (Quintana Roo & Yucatan Peninsula).

I remember when Tulum was still a backpacking oasis

Hey, sean connery and island monkey, not sure where you go in Mexico. But if you go to the most probable place, watch out our little friend sargassum. It's here to stay with us due the higher nutrient content of rivers discharging into the Atlantic and warmer seas. The Caribbean at 26+ °C had to have a downside.

Strangely enough - nope and more nope. My nearest shops are in France- and I am lucky to be able to go when there is hardly anyone there and come straight back, in my own car. As for travel- I am not travelling- that is the whole point. Holiday planned 2 years ago, to Italy, cancelled. And No trip to uk - be it for a holiday or hug those daughters and grandchildren. But I just can't be 'asked' anymore.

Same advice as for Mexico

That is still unnecessary international travel.
