The good news:

With Global Entry and carry on luggage I sailed through OHare immigration in 5 minutes.

The bad news:

COVID testing capability is severely limited in the Chicago ‘burbs these days. Few appointments available at the pharmacies, and doctor’s offices and hospitals are only for symptomatic patients, not for travelers.

Apparently Abbot Labs shut down a production facility earlier in the summer, when it looked like the pandemic was winding down. And now with the surge, a test is difficult to find. (The local Walgreens is limited to 12 tests per day, to give you an idea.)

So if you need a test to return to Switzerland, book one ahead of your trip!

Thankfully it looks like since I am fully vax’d I can get back in without a test. Fingers crossed that doesn’t change anytime soon.
Glad you got through ok, hope your mom is doing well.

Thanks, Ennui!

I’ve spent most of the day battling insurance bureaucracy, as some junior clerk at Medicare, or more likely an algorithm, has countermanded her doctor’s orders.

Lawdy, US health care is seriously messed up.

And one of the sad things is that folks here are so used to jumping through absurd hoops and running the insurance gauntlet that they don’t seem to realize that health care doesn’t have to be this messed up.

But enough of that. At least Chicago is not on fire, or under water, or embracing Gilead - yet - so I’m counting my blessings.

Hi Meloncollie

Glad you made it to the US. I agree with your assessment of insurance companies. A family friend was in involved in a serious car accident. She was clearly not at fault and the injuries included a major concussion. The insurance company wanted to settle quickly so they wouldn’t be liable for any long term costs. Getting a lawyer involved to protect you from your own insurance is now standard practice.

Luckily my friend will be ok and the pressure of settling short term was resolved.
