Camping with tent

Hello, we are looking at doing some camping this summer (tent, somewhat rustic, etc). Any suggestions on best places to do this. Are there specific spots/sites to put up tents or can you set them up anywhere? Are there costs? Thanks.

Within Switzerland? It's a bit complicate.

You're never really alone out in the wilderness and the legislation is aimed to keep all semi-nomad communities in check. Basically, you can only camp in camp sites, in the mountains above the tree line, and on farmer's fields with the consent of the farmer.

However, during the covid19 times, someone thought about the third option and setup an AirBnB-like service to connect farmers and campers and overcome language barriers www.nomady.ch I will try it after the summer, so no first-hand experience yet.

Re: Camping with tent

Campsites are scattered throughout Switzerland. Wild camping (Outside of a designated area) is never straightforward but it is allowed (Exceptions below)

A lot of good sources online for campsite, apps (i.e. Park4Night) etc. that will help too

The basis for wild camping is the Everyman's Right of Access. This allows you to spend one or two nights outside nature reserves, while signs point out possible exceptions. The use of a motorhome or campervan (i.e. VW T6) is not prohibited by law.

Despite the general permission, there are exceptions. Wild camping is generally prohibited in the following areas:
  • Swiss National Park
  • Federal Hunting Ban Areas (Game Reserves)
  • Various nature reserves
  • Wild rest zones (during the protection period)
  • Above the forest line, on alpine pastures, and in rocky terrain, you can camp without any problems.

There are also special restrictions that vary from canton to canton and municipality to municipality. It is, therefore, best to find out about the regional legal situation directly on-site via
  • cantonal geoportals (https://www.kkgeo.ch/geodaten/kantonale_geoportale)
  • the cantonal office for hunting
  • the municipal administration
  • the local traffic and tourism office
  • the responsible gamekeeper
  • the inhabitants of the municipality
  • prohibition signs

Camping comes with a small (CH standards) fee and can even be classified as up to 5star

I will say we have done a lot of camping en Suisse since moving here although I am sure many do it even more than we do - there's a bit of everything and is a great way to explore the country or simply to disconnect. Kids love it!

Your location says Zug.

Go down the the lake and head along the path towards Cham and about a km out is Camping Zug.

That's typical of a Swiss campsite. You can ask about prices there.

There are some nice campsites in Switzerland but they tend to be quite busy in season (there's a season for everything here and people stick to to - exactly). COVID has made things much worse.
A week out of the 'season' and you can have almost a whole campsite for your tent to yourself.

If you want one of those campsites where each family has their own area, you can't see or hear the neighbours and so on - I'd try Canada, the U.S. or Australia !

You could try camping holidays on farms

and these. A bit more off the beaten track

By "quite busy" you mean packed in like sardines, at least that's my experience on anything in a touristy area or on a lake.

But if you go up into the hills a bit, and don't expect an on-site pool etc, then you can find some less busy campsites. I've found Google satellite view can help, if they've taken the photos in the right season.
