My two cents. There are no worse products hands down, than the coop prix guarantee....
I don't have any problem with the ones I buy e.g. the Camembert and Brie and their fizzy grapefruit. Maybe I'm just not very discriminating (and I don't mean that sarcastically).

Denner stores can indeed be a bit grim but their wine selection is very good and very well priced. Regarding the other stuff I find them fine for basics but I wouldn't do my weekly shop there in normal circumstances.

Denner is owned by Migros. They build a Denner next to each Migros so that shoppers can also buy and pick up alcohol n cigs when at Migros.
I saw an article a week or two ago that said that Migros may soon start selling alcohol. That surprised me.

Yeah, here it is...

Swiss supermarket Migros may soon sell alcohol

I think that this is actually quite interesting.

Coming from a Swiss / anglo American background, it has always irritated me that I needed to shop between the Coop and the Migros over the past decades.

But now that the question is open, and Iím more Swiss than Anglo in the meantime, my feeling is more that I should take those few steps more to the coop. It is the way it is, and thatís good.

Please shoot me if I become more Swiss.

Hmm, if they start selling alcohol will they then start selling cigarettes? I thought it was weird at first, but now I like the fact that Migros have written health-related rules into their company constitution. It's refreshingly wholesome.

I don't like it much and only go there for specific things (or when Swiffer is on "Aktion" ).

It's interesting how people tend to have their favourite shop here and kind of stick to it, I wonder if that is a Swiss thing?

Safeway used to be my favourite in England. Was not happy when it was gone.
In Germany mine is EDK.

For a long time I refused to go to Aldi or Lidl here. Still don't like Aldi but discovered that at Lidl the veggie variety is bigger and the fruit variety is much more interesting. And the quality of both is good.

I think Denner would thrive in some other parts of the world. You canít make a blanket statement that the prices are mediocre. As I and Pachyderm mentioned already, Denner has an excellent wine selection at very competitive prices. I agree that the choice is limited but Denner complements other stores.

Denner periodically has great deals that other stores cannot compete with. For example, I recently picked up around 20 cartons of Chaokoh coconut milk priced at 3.95 for 2 x 500ml. Itís indistinguishable from the Thai kitchen coconut milk sold at coop and Migros for 4.20 per 500ml. This is a saving of over 50%! As both a vegan and curry lover I expect such an offer would even interest you

After 13 years of shopping in Switzerland I have concluded that:
  • Migros is on average better quality AND cheaper than Co-Op, especially for fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, bread and dairy products. M-budget is WAY batter than the appalling Co-Op Prix Garantie crap. Migros doesn't have as much branded stuff though, of course.
  • Denner is always worth checking out once a week as it usually has decent "special offers" on treats (chocolate etc), cleaning products and alcohol. Also Swiss-produced pork and chicken is the cheapest I have seen.
  • Aldi has on average better quality products than Lidl and Denner and is also mostly better than Co-Op, albeit of course with a more limited selection of products. If I lived closer to one I would shop there much more often but sadly I don't.
  • In summary and in terms of how often I shop where; I now do 60% Migros, 20% Denner and the rest split between other supermarkets as needed.
Besides Denner for cleaning products, I disagree with every point made here.

Nothing wrong with DD nowadays Ė 20 years ago they often forgot to mop the floors. Certainly not the widest choice but locally good one stop shopping. If a regular chore is meant to be turned into an ďexperienceĒ try Globus and donít moan about prices

Update: recently people buying already grey mincemeat have lodged complaints that it was *gasp* grey

It's refreshingly hypocritical.

For example, at the Horgen Migros, the kiosk selling cigarettes is actually inside the store - at the entrance - and you have to walk past it to do your shopping.
In a COOP, you actually have to walk further to buy cigarettes and spirits and often this sales area is not a place you even need to walk past to do your shopping.

Other Migros have their alcohol-selling wing (aka Denner) adjoining and under the same roof.

They should do away with the hypocrisy and either get rid of Denner and the instore kiosks or go the whole way and sell alcohol in the same way as other supermarkets.

Ahh, now you mention it I do remember seeing a kiosk in one, completely forgot about that. Ok, well I at least appreciate the initial principle that they had in their constitution, even if reality then kicked in.

I guess it's better than Aldi and Lidl which have the cigarettes above the checkout, 1970s style!

Re: Which supermarket is the cheapest?

Are we now allowed to pronounce the 's' in Migros ? that's been bothering me for quite some time

Me I'm totally in for Migro I now very well the one at Westside in Bern.
They are cleaner, fancier, more chic ..I find their selection of international food (italian oils, spices, tomato sauces, english ,etc) much better and of a good quality.. Their BIO products like flour, oil, rice, pasta ,seems nice, have some good specials ..

Only if you're German or a fan of Esperanto.

There are more things, Migros keeps moving away from Duttweiler's ideas. Over the years they kept selling more and more brand products (Coca Cola - they used to have their Vivi-Cola - Kelloggs, Knorr comes to mind) and since April apparently they took in chocolate from Lindt&SprŁnglis as well as Toblerone.

But more drastic: Only 60% of the employees were covered by the collective labour agreement in 2020, compared to 2006 when it was 80%!

Blick, German, Video in Swiss-German

I'd say the less Duttweiler-ideas left in Migros, the less reason to "support" Migros, the more will turn to Lidl, Aldi 'cause "why the heck not". Or if one is into revolutionary shop founders: Denner. They still follow the gist somehow.

I agree with you for once.
The Migrolinos have alcohol, the Migrol gas stations, and most of all the Migros online shop.

As for the cigs at the checkout, that's probably to avoid thefts. Same with the trash bags.

PETA keep reporting that Chaokoh (or their suppliers) use apes for the coconut harvest that are cruelly kept. This article is by their German branch, you can probably find the same in other languages (links in the bottom left corner). The article lists other retailers/brands they confirm don't ab/use apes.

They remind me of 1980ís small town corner shops. That smellÖ. . And the mess of packaging everywhere.

I shop in manor with coop for small more regular stuff as itís the only one relatively close to me.

But I buy most of stuff in a farmers market sort of place. Fruit and veg.

Like with illegal drugs, people will still smoke. I doubt the illegal manufactures will worry about the quality of what gets sold.
