Beautiful Switzerland in ONE WEEK

Hey everyone! I have been here for 2 months now and studying German. Now, my (hyper) sister is coming over to visit from Mexico for one week. I live in Zurich and would like to give her a tour (umm, yup, the touristic trip will be for me as well).

So, I would truly appreciate your suggestions of the "MUST SEE" in Zurich city and in other parts of Switzerland. I must add that my sister is a city girl so long typical swiss mountain tours would not be so appealing for her.

I know that your experience will be of great help.

Thank you!

Everything I would have suggested would have been in the mountains. Maybe you could let us know what kind of things "city girls" do like to do and then people can suggest something that matches her criteria within your region. The more specific your question is, the better the responses are likely to be.

Re: Beautiful Switzerland in ONE WEEK

I would recommend day trips to the following cities, Luzern (lovely old town for window shopping), Bern (its got the longest covered shopping arcade in Europe), Lausanne (old town is lovely for walking around in, and like all the rest of the Swiss towns, great for window shopping). Each of the above towns has got its charm and character. There is plenty to see and do depending on what you like. A useful site is www.myswitzerland.ch

Re: Beautiful Switzerland in ONE WEEK

Yeah, I know it is a little complicated with no mountain tours. To be more specific, I don't see my sister climbing for 8 hours to get to the top of the mountain considering she has not done sports in ages. However, I was thinking of taking her to the Titlis (cable car) and she would certainly enjoy that. Hope this gives you a more clear idea on the mountain issue.

On the other hand, I know Zurich and Luzern, for example, are cities full of cultural events and historical sites to see, however, I need your help and suggestions on all there is to do.

Think: what left you in awe when you saw or visit a place for the first time?

I am going to be honest and say the best parts of Switzerland are not the cities. They are nice and all but not really cities more like big villages. Anyhow, I would agree visits to Lausanne, Luzern and even Basel (some good museums there) would be worthwhile.

First weekend I was in Switzerland, I did this:

Hired a car, and drove from Zurich down and through the St Gotthard Tunnel and down to Ticino. The drive goes past a lot of lakes and mountains, and the scenery was both spectacular and typical, especially on the other side of the St Gotthard.

Then from the Bellinzona area across to Lausanne and down to Geneva, had a walk around. Then on towards France (Chamonix direction), and through the tunnel under Mont Blanc into northern Italy near Aosta. Then back up into the mountains across the top of the St Berhard Pass, and back up towards Zurich.

I found this was a very varied trip, and lets you see most of Switzerland within a couple of days, as well as going past places like Lucerne on the way. Gave me a good feel for how beautiful and varied the country was, without having to do the organised rushing around thing.

Must-see cities?

Luzern, Bern, Montreaux (chateau chillon).

A trip to the italian part would also be a good idea.

Re: Beautiful Switzerland in ONE WEEK

Perhaps a visit to Gruyere or Appenzell might be interesting to your sister? As dakman said, the best parts of Switzerland are not the cities. Ok, I wasn't exactly in awe when first I visited Gruyere but on the whole, a very interesting trip.

Re: Beautiful Switzerland in ONE WEEK

How about a ride on the glacier express? You could then have lunch etc while watching the scenery go past?
