Re: Italy

Train is definately cheap of you book through SBB or TrenItalia more than 2 weeks in advance and if going to Milan or Venice. The trick is to just search from your location to that location. Not go through click and rail.

If you go through the Trenitalia sitet, choose the SMART 2 discount option. If you book through this site, you can ride first class for the same price as second class.

My recent trip from Geneva - Venice cost chf 32 and so did my Milan- Basel ride.

Re: Italy

The mess w/ Alitalia suggests that train would be the best option.
BUT DO BOOK BEFOREHAND http://www.trenitalia.com
Xmas sees a lot of expats returning to central-south Italy to visit parents + families, so things can get a bit messy.

Ciao

Paul

Re: Italy

For us, 18 months was pretty much the worst age to travel with kids. Since you are only going to Italy, I would choose the quickest option with the plane. Actually, the least stressful way would be taking a car and not planning on driving for more than 4 hours maximum per day.
