| | The world's first zero-starred hotel.
Trust The Economist blogs to come up with something to make you smile! Gulliver, their travel blogger, picked up a story, complete with slide show, from The Wall Street Journal about The world's first zero star hotel: | Quote: | | | | Housed in a subterranean fallout shelter in Switzerland, the Null Stern Hotel bills itself as the world's first zero-star hotel. Accommodations are cheap but spartan: No TV, no private bathrooms and, most jarring of all, no daylight. The official opening isn't until 2009, but the hotel recently hosted volunteers for a test run. | | | | | Anyone care to make a reservation there?

Not my cup of tea but a good place to put up family and friends. |

GACK! Photo #2 looks like my ex mother-in-law.
Otherwise, no thanx- I'll pass on the concrete-underground-camping-experience. |

Does it have a somewhat ramshackle sign outside saying "Farty Owls"?

It's about time. To many expensive hotels in Switzerland and not enough is offered in the "budget traveler" price range. To bad it's not super close to any spectacular skiing, etc. Or is it...?

Ok it just looks like any random youth hostel to be honest although its situated in a Nuclear shelter. The zero star thing is just hype. I'd stay there without a problem.

I would not totally rule it out if I were looking for budget accomodation in that part of the country. As brianb_ie mentioned, it doesn't look much different to hostel accomodation. It is also a fair bit cheaper than the ones that I have seen advertised.

If you feel like putting yourself on ice for a night you could always sleep here.
Not sure about zero star, but certainly sub-zero.

| | Sexy hotel in switzerland http://travel.msn.com/Guides/article...7799>1=41000 switzerland is in the top 8th | Quote: | | | | Okay, But Only Because You're the Last Man on Earth
Swatches, impenetrable bank accounts, instant cocoa—the Swiss have made many indispensable contributions to global culture. But the Null Stern (Zero Star) Hotel, fashioned from a nuclear bunker beneath the small town of Sevelen, about 70 miles southwest of Zürich, is unlikely to inspire copycats. Still, the notion of a hot night in a former atomic-blast-proof facility will certainly appeal to those into (extremely) safe sex. Brothers and artists Frank and Patrik Riklin have converted a seldom used fallout shelter and old concrete-walled factory into a high-concept lodging, with screens in lieu of a view (live footage from outside is projected onto the walls to create mock windows). While you and your partner survey the modest but certainly novel accommodations (a bargain at about $9 a night), you can imagine that civilization has been destroyed and it's up to you to repopulate the planet (come on, like you haven't used that line before). After opening for a trial period, during which it saw only a dozen guests, the Zero Star is scheduled to open more widely soon. Check the town's website for updates. | | | | | |

At $9 per night, now even *I* can afford to live in Switzerland!
