Zurich to Morocco over New Year

Hi folks! a couple of friends and myself are planning to go to morocco over christmas and new year, and i would be grateful for some advice

my initial research shows, Zurich to Casablanca with Iberia costs about chf400 but with 1 stopover in malaga, the flight is about 17-20 hrs. alternatively, we could also head out from Geneva, flight lasts about 7-10 hrs. another option would be to fly to malaga and then head to aleciras for a ship to Tangier.

i can't seem to find a reasonably priced flight of reasonable duration does anyone have any experience traveling to morocco to share? we are flexible as to where we land, casablanca or not. please help!

gruss, hsiang

Re: Zurich to Morocco over New Year

We flew to Marrakesh from Basel on Easy Jet. Flew back Casablanca to Madrid and the Madrid to Basel on EZ jet. Spent one day layover in Madrid. that was in Christmas 2007. Price was good if I recall. Only way to fly Casablanca on Easy Jet was through Madrid.

Why is the flight so long, it should not be more than 3-4 hours?

But Malaga is not so bad to spend a night, good tapas bars. You can take the train from the airport to city center it is about 40 minutes if I recall maybe less.

Just saw Euro 31 to fly Madrid to Marrakesh in December. Also may be an option EZ jet basel to alicante, ryan air, alicante to fez. not sure about price or connections

Re: Zurich to Morocco over New Year

We're going in October and have booked Basel-Marrakesh directly with Easyjet.

It was the best option we could find. Costs about CHF490.

Not that you asked but// we took the train all over Morrocco, Marakesho to Rabat to Fez to Casablanca, it was pretty good service. I personally would not spend too much time Casablanca, main site is the Mosque which is Amazing but other towns much more interesting. i loved Fez/

I come from Ceuta. When I go to see my parents I fly to Malaga and then take the Helicopter to Ceuta. From Ceuta you can take a taxi to the borders and then a Taxi to Morocco.
The helicopter is not cheap. 150euros. But doing the bus from Malaga to Algeciras...
A nightmare.
You can also fly to Madrid and take a plane to Tangiers but check EZjet as I am not sure.
Last time I flew Swiss were cheaper than anything else.

nice info how about driving? if its scenic and does not cost much more than train, we'd certainly like to drive. btw, is it right-hand drive like in europe?

thanks for the info! are there any rail connections between malaga and Algeciras or Gibraltar?

seems many people do that stopover in madrid, i have to seriously consider that.

not sure about driving ( I would not want to drive in Marrakesh myself). I am sure driving is fine outside of the cities. ...train was dirt cheap (and we went first class) but I am sure having a car improves accessibility.

There are some interesting alternatives transportation in morocco, Ride sharing with a driver is a pretty common practice there. Thus, there are scheduled ride shares from say Rabat to Fez as an example with a Moroocan driver. And it mostly safe, except you need to be a good negotiator.

If you take taxi's in a city make sure they put the meter on and pay the meter fare (quite often they won't put on the meter unless you ask them, and they are required to charge the meter). But, if the meter is not on you end up in a negotiation.

I am sure everyone right hand drives, Morrocco was not a UK colony, a French colony for a time I think.
