Driving through the Alps

Hello EFers,

I am planning to rent the car and go friday afternoon from Zurich, down to Chur (sleeping there?). Follow the road at the south of the alps to Zermatt (sleeaping saturday there?). Take again the road to Montreux and come back to Zurich. The plan is to be stoping to take nice pictures and little walks in any interesting place on the way. But I do not know many things: Is that road ok to drive? is really worthy (nice scenic views)? Any special place not to miss on the way? Where to sleep to make it cheaper?

Sound good? Any suggestions?

Thankssss

Re: Driving through the Alps

You will not be able to drive into Zermatt. You have to leave the car in Täsch and take the train from there.

OK, not going up to Zermatt. Fair enough!
Anyone has some experience in a similar trip?

I didn't mean to put you off going to Zermatt ! It's only a 12 minute ride on the train and the return fare, for an adult, is CHF 15.20

Re: Driving through the Alps

Depending on how directly you want to drive, you could go via the Klausenpass from Linthal to Altdorf - meant to be one of the most beautiful passes. Not been there myself but hear good things.

Re: Driving through the Alps

On the Zermatt/Montreux stage don't take the A9 autoroute all the way or you'll miss a lot.
Sion is worth stopping off.
From Sion to Martigny, instead of taking the A9 I'd take the back road through the vineyards (through Conthey, Vetroz, Ardon, Leytron, Saillon and Fully. There are plenty of caves where you can sample some of the Valais' best wines.
From Martigny get back on the autoroute and come off at Aigle to view chateau d'aigle. Nice walks around chateau through Vineyards.
As HollidayG said, chateau Chillon on the lake is the next stop before Montreux.
On the way back to Zurich Murten is worth seeing.

Re: Driving through the Alps

We went from Altdorf, over the Fluelen, and then to Zermatt last week. We left early on a weekday and encountered only a few vehicles. We saw lots of lonely campers and tents along side the road and were greet by a marmot family coming down the pass. Towards the end of the pass, in Wallis, we passed by lots and lots of bicyclists. More bikers than motorcycles.

How times have changed.

In Sion, you might also want to visit the undergound lake:

it's a very short trip (but worth seeing) unless you get into a queue.

I agree - I've done it several times on the bike and in the car. Well worth doing the Klausenpass IMHO. Just be prepared for lots of corners, great scenery and big smiles. (If you like to do it by motorcycle! - Although in the car is great fun too)
