Glacier Express March or Summer?

Hi, my in-laws are visiting both in March next year and possibly August, they want to go down towards St Moritz area and had seen an offer (in UK) for the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express this started at Luzern and stopped at around 4 hotels but included flights, this was very good but do not need flights... as they are visiting us before and after their trip, I have two questions:

1. Is it best to do this trip in Winter months or Summer months?

2. Do you know any site we can help them book package with train and hotels etc.. they do have halbtax cards each.

As this is something we have yet to do we have very little knowledge on this, thanks in advance.

Re: Glacier Express March or Summer?

We did both expresses on May, June this year, with my in-law too . Personally, I prefer Bernina Express which we could see both summer (green fields with flowers...) and winter (snow, ice...) along the trip. Maybe for Glacier Ex you should do in winter when everything is in white, in summer the scence doesn't look so great, especially Zermatt.

For your question:
1. It depends. My in-low is from tropical asia so she expected to see snow, maybe yours won't.
2. I don't know, but you can see their websites and go ask SBB travel agents.

Re: Glacier Express March or Summer?

As I have mentioned in other threads, and other people all seem to agree, the Bernina Express is the better of the journeys. The Glacier Express is a very long journey with spells of not very dramatic scenery. It is as much a travelling restaurant as a train journey.

The Bernina Express has a new surprise at every turn; and there are many of them!

Thanks Deep Purple, this is exactly what we are looking for and I think we have now decided on the Bernina Express, I assume this should be done around the summer months to get the best out of it?

I travelled the Bernina Expess in mid July and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think that a little earlier in the year may be better as there should be more spring flowers out, and a bit more snow left on the mountains.

I think that a winter trip would be a totally different experience with so much hidden.
