Basel to Netherlands

Hi,

I am visiting Netherlands in August and I am new to Europe railway systems.

What is the easiest and cheapest way to get there, and any online reference on pricing and travel time online? Been search for SBB, but no price listed.

Please also advice on booking procedure..

Thanks a lot!

James

Re: Basel to Netherlands

Probably much cheaper to fly. try easyjet.com, they go out of Basle. I think on the SBB site you have to request a price for international travel and they will e-mail the cost.

You can take an overnight train from Zurich or Basel direct to Amsterdam, which can be cheaper than the regular day trains. A company called City NightLine runs them, here is their website.

Another useful site to look at for knowledge about cross-Europe train tickets is seat61.com, it is focused on getting to/from the UK, but has some info that is useful for getting around Europe in general.

It depends which part of the country you intend to visit. Amsterdam and environs, it will make sense to fly. For places in the south, Arnhem is 5 hours by train. To fly you would have to go via Amsterdam and take the train - which will easily mount up to 5 hours taking into account the lead times for check-in, luggage collection etc.

Cheers,
Nicik

Re: Basel to Netherlands

Try swiss.com - they fly daily from Basel to Amsterdam and if you are an early booker you can go return for about CHF 100 including tax. Another comfortable way of travelling to Holland from Basel by ICE train. Also pretty cheap and no need for a transfer.

Hope this helps.

Re: Basel to Netherlands

You can check the German Railway company DB you can depart from SBB as well. If I recall correctly will be around 250 Euros.

Re: Basel to Netherlands

I always take the train now, the plane takes just as long for me door to door. I think my ticket was 170 each way, but this was a late booking, if you book 7 days ahead it should be cheaper. And the night train should arrive early, maybe between 6-8am. If you have a halbtax, you get 25 or 30 percent off the German part if you buy a railplus card for 25chf which is valid for a year.

DB often have special deals when you travel at the weekend - especially if you travel with a partner. Don't forget your Swiss Half-Price card (i.e. Halbtaxabonnement) gets you discounts on DB trains.

Cheers,
Nick
