What to do in Switzerland when it's raining?

Hi there,

So I've got a friend down from Norway for the weekend, and the Swiss weather's not at it's finest (I don't know why we couldn't have had Wednesday's weather this weekend! ). I have a 9 O'clock pass to use and he, a swiss pass, so basically we can go anywhere, question is what's worth doing on a Saturday when it's raining?
We will be leaving from Basel, and staying the night in Lugano because we're taking the Bernina Express up to Chur on Sunday. We were thinking of maybe dropping in to Ascona to check out the Autumn festival, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Clara.

In the same boat, got guests visiting over the weekend (though not from as far away as Norway!). We'll still try to make the best of it, and plan a trip to neighbouring Alsace, probably Colmar. Weather there predicts rain too, though!

I did not look at the weather report in detail... but: Usually the rainclouds are not too high, so if you take a cable car to one of the higher peaks, you can look down on the clouds and enjoy sunshine, a beer and a stunning view... for example the Säntis is good for this. Most of the cable car operators have webcams online, so you can even check if it is worth or not...

They have a saying in Norway which translates to there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. So dont worry the weather wont bother the norwegians.

This weekend, the weather in the Tessin is somewhat friendlier than North of the Alps. Check the forecasts to dodge the heavy rain.

I guess that you are looking for somewhere en route from Basel to Lugano.

Lucerne is one option. Try the museum of transport with planetarium and iMax. Details

Nearer Lugano you could stop off in Bellinzona for the castles
