Great places to visit in 'the mountains' without having to Ski?

Hello All,

I am new to Switzerland and currently living in Zurich. I love the mountains and would like some idea's or advice on nice places to visit in the mountains without having to ski...

Im mostly interested in day trips from Zurich, but a little further a-field is also OK. Cheap places not flooded with tourists where I can just walk or take a picnic would be ideal but places on the beaten track with nice viewpoints, walking tracks or just a lovely train ride would be cool. Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated....

Many thanks

Sonny

Try Flumserberg, not an hours drive from Zürich or Rigi near Luzern, great views of the Alps form the top and you can enjoy walking or sledging, Grindelwald is also good with great views of the Eiger north face.

Rigi.ch
Flumseberg.ch
Grindelwald.ch

Day trip to Meiringen and up the cable car to the Alpentower. If you stop over take the bus from Meiringen in the morning take to Schwarzwaldalp and do the 5.5km sledge run. Fantastic views and fun.

Day trip to Interlaken - Beatenberg. Take the cable car to the Niederhorn. Beautiful scenery. Good for sledging or hiking, see here: http://www.niederhorn.ch/en/winter/winter-fun.html

Re: Great places to visit in 'the mountains' without having to Ski?

Just to add to all the good suggestions so far, suggest you check-out the following site of the Swiss Alpine Club.

http://www.sac-cas.ch/en/huts/search-a-hut.html

If there's a possibility to stay overnight in one of these huts, then chances are that there will be well mapped out travel possibilities to get there. I only say this, because these huts generally tend to be situated in areas of outstanding natural beauty.

I'm not a member of the SAC, but their reputation precedes them...

Enjoy the hikes :-)
