rusty, you're right about the guinness and whiskey but wrong about the togas.
You wander from station to station with just your shamrock showing
Unfortunately, large enough shamrocks were not available and so I had to wear the patterned toga instead.

Re: best spas in Switzerland?

Let me tell you - just book this if you are prepared to do it as a couple.
I was alone and so they "paired" me with an old guy with an amazing chest wig.

Fortunately, he was very polite and didn't look directly at my shamrock during the nudie bits.

Scuol, without a doubt.

http://www.scuol.ch/de/welcome.cfm
I definitely agree that Scuol is a one of the best places to go. It's easy to get to by train or also by car. The pools are very good. The sauna area is excellent and offers a really impressive selection of different types and styles. I've never tried the massage offerings or other more special things they do so can't comment on those.

A Roman-Irish spa sounds like an interesting concept. I assume this means pools are filled with a mixture of Guinness, whiskey and wine ....
Remember we're talking hot pools. So just inhale deeply. Honest, I didn't drink.

LOL to that...
And unfortunately no to all of that.
But when I get a chance to hit Leukerbad I always make a point to treat my shamrock to something dff'rent

Another cute little spa is in Andeer, on your way south before Splügen.
Swimming pool + sauna, steambath etc (all rigorously au naturel)

I love the hikes around Vals... all the way to the lake and beyond and around.... or else I must have been in a parallel universe

The alpentherme in Leukerbad is great. Have been there both in Winter and Summer. Especially in wintertime, it is nice to lay in the warm baths outside and look upon to snow covered mountains.

QUOTE=Rustygraben;1060833]What have I done before, Mrs Raincookie? Ambling in a toga, telling leprechaun stories in Latin or dipped naked (without a shamrock) in a mixed-spa?[/QUOTE]

Mr Rustygraben -

I'm afraid Mrs Raincookie got divorced and is now using her single name again.

The Roman-Irish spa is really to be recommended though - if you can get over any shamrock shyness. The scrub-down makes you feel realy clean, your skin glows and then they wrap you in blankets and you doze to the fantastic backdrop of the Engadiner Alps.

*sigh*

(Only negative - guy in chest wig snoring loudly on the couch next to yours......)

I had never heard of this before I came here, but they also have one in Baden Baden. No idea what is really Irish about it, perhaps the very cold dip at the end of the ritual, I imagine the Irish sea would feel about that cold

Re: best spas in Switzerland?

Let me add that I am just looking for thermals baths and sauna for a night at a reasonable price, not a full hotel package with stone massage, deep moisture treatment and Cologne rectum cleansing.

The new spa in Zurich is ridiculously overpriced and I believe is only intended for worn-out investment bankers and foreign residents with a flat-rate tax agreement.

Many thanks for your suggestions, though.

Cologne rectum cleansing.
Is this a Westphalian speciality or a new fashion for using fancy smelling stuff on one's nether regions?

Re: best spas in Switzerland?

I understand the origin is Greek and was a public service there until the new austerity measures were "introduced", as it were. In Switzerland, the treatment entitles you to a 20% discount on your next colonoscopy if the latter is performed no more than a week after the former.

Re: best spas in Switzerland?

What about spas in neighbouring Austria (got to take advantage of the cheap euro)? Wartherhof and Telfs were mentioned. Any other spa-lovers second those recommendations? Other suggestions?
