Does anyone know what time my local police station opens?

Ahh sorry, that's a long running in-joke regarding lazy bastiges from another mailing list I'm on.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

Consider the train. It's about the same price, and a lot more relaxing in my view. Of course it takes longer, but not that much when you consider the check in time etc. You're delivered directly into central London and you don't get treated like something between a terrorist and a crated veal calf.

hmm

Zürich HB 09.05.07 dep 09:04
London Waterloo arr 18:56
Duration 10:52 Changes 2 ICN, TGV, EST

11 hours on the train. That's a little more than the 3 hours flying.

Any hint on how much that chunk of my life wasted might cost me?

Re: Zurich to London Flights

From next month:
Zurich: 7:02
Waterloo: 13:56
Duration: 7:58

Of course it takes longer. But you can relax, see the countryside, get a beer in Paris, arrive actually in London, and not have to go through airport hell. Plus you do your bit for the environment.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

Have you checked the train prices. Last time I looked, it was more expensive than flying. However, I agree that it is more relaxing and eco friendly. For me - I need to head to the north of England, then the riduculous prices they charge for a train from london to manchester make it a bit of a non starter.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

My folks booked a return train ticket London - Zurich for 85quid. They did book over a month in advance though. Still it was about half the price of the plane.
After June, or whenever all the highspeed links are finally open, it is supposed to take 2:30 to get to Paris and then 4:00 to get to Zurich.
Just depends on how long the wait in Paris is I guess as to how long it will take in total.

The new TGV line goes into operation at that time, drastically reducing travel time between Zürich/Basel and Paris. The schedule change was built into the yearly timetable last December.

All of this was actually in the news again yesterday and is still at swissinfo (and consequently linked from ef's start page at the moment). Supposedly the new Paris-destined trains will have market-based pricing along the lines of easyJet. They intend to make the rail competitive with easyJet flights out of Basel.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

Also they are opening up St Pancras which should mean the Eurostar can travel through London at its proper speed, instead of having to crawl along like it does at the moment.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

This is how you get the train to London cheapest (that I've found). It all depends on booking ahead of course, but so do the planes:

Step 1: Go to Basel on SBB. (Free if you have a GA obviously)
Step 2: Use the ticket to Paris that you booked more than a month in advance on www.voyages-sncf.fr. It's best to get a 'prems' ticket from Basel to gay Paris. This can be as cheap as EUR68.40 return. If there are no 'prems' left then get a 'decouvert sejour' ticket (you must stay a Saturday night). Note, there are usually no 'prems' tickets from Zurich, hence this approach.
Step 3: Walk from Gare de L'est to Gare du Nord (5 mins - but there are steps!) or take the metro which takes longer and also has steps.
Step 4: Drink beer in French cafe (ideally reading a book in German to look really sophisticated).
Step 5: Eurostar to Waterloo. This was booked on www.eurostar.com and could have cost as little as 59 squids return. (remember to allow a good hour between the arrival of your train in Paris and the departure of your Eurostar).
Step 6: Repeat backwards

Total return price (at today's exchange rates): CHF 256

Note, this is the cheapest way (that I've found). Going on the new TGV line is going to be quicker but is likely to cost a bit more. Hope that might convince/help/interest a few people.

Re: Zurich to London Flights

www.skyscanner.net
www.travelsupermarket.com

Travel supermarket works only for flights starting from the UK, but once you have seen where and when the cheap deals are, you can go to the airlines to look for flights starting from Switzerland.

Regards,

John
