I'm going to Berlin for the weekend with a friend, and wondered whether any EFers had any ideas for stuff to do off the beaten track?

I've already had a look at the travel guides etc, and fully intend to stand in the queue with the other tourists at the checkpoint charlie museum and stuff my face with currywurst etc, but I'd like to do something a little different...

So, does anything spring to mind? Fun, weird, dangerous, bizarre, illegal, ...anything?

Any travel tips would be most appreciated!!

You can't do anything weird dangerous bizarre in Berlin. It is a way too nice place for that so ...

It's in a partially destroyed building covered in crazy graffiti. Live music every night. Check out the building too, not just the bar. You can go up the stairs and check out some funky art galleries, a theatre, and in the back there's a cool outdoor bar. Not sure if that's open in the winter though. It's called Kunsthaus Tacheles, definitely my favourite part of Berlin.

Well Dan, if you don't bring back a piece of the Berlin Wall then consider the trip a resounding failure.

I do miss living there, need to go back myself and visit at some point.

I went to Amsterdam when I was 16 and had my eyes well and truely opened.... I was under the impression Berlin was quite the open/cosmopolitan/smoke dope in public city...then again it was a German guy that told me that so perspective may be an issue?

Dan, with 10,000 night clubs/bars, I think you'll find something fun and crazy. Just walk around Warschauer Platz. If I remember right, there was a fun club right under the subway station there.

Rich, your WB are just fine...don't worry about them. I'm just surprised you don't freeze in winter.

also wacky was a bar next to the entrance of the "hackesche höfe", you see a red light strip in the air..follow that! I forgot the name. Anopther one is the "lee harvey oswald" bar next to Boxhagener platz...I am not sure if its still there...

a fantastic little place is the bebop bar, willibald alexis strasse, "insider kreuzberg", with great jazz jamsession on sunday, and maybe even better, the "Arcanoa" (also X-Berg) or even ACUD in mitte (near Rosenthaler Platz) for colourful people and music.

illegal: try to get into a meeting of Mastul, a "cultural society" in Wedding http://www.mastul.de/start.html

also illegal, there used to be "Kino durch's fenster" (cinema through the window) in Friedrichshain, where you had to enter the cinema room (aka living room) through a window.

Nice food: go to "Lei und Lui" in the wilsnacker strasse...somewhere between italy/middle east/.... wild combinations but fantastic and cheap.
