Bernina Express 1910 - 2010

I have been looking at Graubunden Newsletter regarding various special trips for the Centenary of the Bernina Express.

This includes various steam trains and other special trains, exhibitions and special offers. there are some very attractive prices e.g. World Heritage Pass:
2 days unlimited travel from Thusis to Tirano 2nd class (Excluding Glacier Express/Bernina Express trains) CHF51.00 with half-price card. This includes a CHF15.00 guide book.

Full Details

If you have never travelled the Bernina Express route, 2010 looks like the time to do it. Having travelled most of the tourist routes, and a fair amount of other routes across Switzerland, I rate the Bernina Express as the best by far.

I have travelled the Glacier Express as well as the Bernina Express. It is not as good a trip. It is a much longer journey. The scenery is not as dramatic for most of the journey. If you were travelling from Basel I would recommend taking the train to Brig and then joining the Glacier Express or a local train for the last part to Zermatt.

Re: Bernina Express 1910 - 2010

Thanks! I forgot to mention we started from Chur until Poschiavo where we stopped to visit the town and taste wonderful Pizzoccheri!
Maybe next time we will repeat the Bernina but until Tirano with relatives.
Thanks again for the advice!

I agree completely. In a journey of around four hours there are so many highlights. These include the Landwasser viaduct, the Preda spiral tunnels through the Albula pass, the Morteratsch glacier, the Bernina pass, Alp Grum, several lakes, Poschiavo, the Brusio spiral viaduct and Tirano itself.

Re: Bernina Express 1910 - 2010

Both along the Bernina railway (for example Ospizio Bernina to Poschiavo) and the Albula line there are beautiful hiking trails. Highly recommended and great fun.

Re: Bernina Express 1910 - 2010

If you are taking the Bernina Express between now and August, you will notice the Brusio spiral viaduct clad in red. This is scaffolding for essential maintenance. The RhB seem do have done everything to maintain the spectacular setting whilst undertaking this essential work.

I spotted this 'home video' of the Bernina Express on You Tube. It was taken in June and includes the Brusio spiral viaduct works.
