Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

Greetings,

I was told today that I need to take a 2 week vacation starting on June 14 (this has to do with vacation days from our headquarters in the US not rolling over). Now, a vacation is a good thing ofcourse :-) However I have not had time to plan and want a little advice from you all on what a single woman can do (safely) alone in Europe for 2 whole weeks. Ofcourse I can go anywhere in the world but here are my requirements, any ideas will be greatly appreciated:

1. I want something that can be relaxing, a spa perhaps but I don't want to be alone for dinner so nighttime activities are a most

2. I would like to be able to have some cultural days

3. Other very vibrant people around would be nice, I am pretty extroverted

4. Simply put I want it all bundled into one, relaxing, fun, cultural, others around and safe. Did I mention I want to look out at the sea?

5. One more thing, nothing in the US or too close by i.e. the Bahamas

Help!

Thank you in advance :-)

Catina

Hi Catina
Call me crazy, but how about a salsa cruise? (alternatively could be some other kind of cruise)
I don't know though of anything concrete, so it is just an idea...

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

Tiens! It seems that i am not the only who is going on vacations by herself... Mind you, in other countries there are travel agencies specialized in singles. But here, the "travel consultants" shiver in shock when you pop in the news and advise you that you should pay an extra fee for the luxury of having you own room all for yourself...

Anyway, I would wholeheartly recommend you Barcelona and/or Ibiza

It is quite safe (have been there many times on my own, never had a problem), as close to the sea as you can get, good weather by this time of the year, excellent food, excellent cultural offer (if you are into * advanced music * you will arrive in Barcelona just in time for the SONAR festival), full of vibrant and friendly people, also an excellent place for shopping, specially if you are like design...

For Ibiza, i would avoid the usual package holiday tourist traps, and would go to a "rural hotel" instead. Formentera is also a good choice, though it is a bit smaller.

You can find a small listing of rural hotels here:
http://www.baleares.com/fincas/fincasing.htm
or here:
http://en.toprural.com/

Enjoy your vacation!

Lucy

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

Just be careful while travelling as a single women. When I backpacked around the world on my own I met this really strange guy I couldn't get rid of; anyway I thought as I couldn't get him to leave I'd just marry him . We've been together 11 year now. Seriously I did a lot of travelling on my own before I met my other half, it's a great way to see places & do things at your own pace. For nights I always took a book out with me so if I was in a bar or restaurant and had no-one to talk to I wouldn't be sitting there like a pillock, most of the time I never needed it as I usually always ended up talking to someone.

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

When I was in Barcelona recently I remember reading that hotels in Spain are constrained by law from charging above a certain percentage of the double-price to a single guest. Anyone know the detail ?

I would recommend also Spain mainland for relaxing tour or Ibeeffa for nocturnal lunacy.

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

May I suggest a small group tour? There are plenty of wonderful trips you could make with specialists in small group travel. It's not all lecherous single men and smug couples in matching clothes.

The smaller the group the more likely they are to make an effort to bond. I used to work in adventure travel tourism ('soft adventures') and they were usually 80% single traveling women looking for a little companionship and something more than just lying on the beach.

How about a trip to Eastern Turkey? Fascinating, beautiful locations and culture. Or touring Southern Italy with the benefit of someone who knows the history and can take you to the authentic restaurants?

PM me if you want some tips as to companies. Oh, and if you want to employ a private guide to Syria... just say the word

Hi Uncle Mac

Could you please also give me more info regarding the group tour you talked about? I will be wildly interested if they also organize some camping trip to south America!! Thanks.

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

My suggestion? If you want culture yet the sea. . .Go to Italy or Spain. Traveling alone by your self in Europe as a female? Not a problem, whatsoever. Been all over, never been hassled, never had a problem meeting people.

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

Ok, here's my suggestion: Japan.

I've never found a country that is easier or more convenient to travel in. It's totally clean (as in way cleaner than Switzerland, you'll never see people treating their country as a giant ashtray for example). Totally safe, beautiful scenery and the people might be shy but are totally polite and friendly. They will always help a foreigner who might be confused out of a sense of obligation. Did I mention the ocean? The southern coastal areas have warm water.

One of the best parts is that it is very tourist friendly and you'll always be given nice maps and information in English in every tourist office in every train station (guess what, tourist offices don't close on Sundays either!)

Despite what people say, it's way cheaper than Switzerland and if you bought a Japan Rail pass you could ride their high speed bullet trains around the entire country for a flat rate of around 350-400 francs for your entire two-weeks.

I just got back from spending a month there (alone) and I think it's one of the greatest countries on the planet (and believe me, I'm a picky bastard!)

Re: Travel Ideas for a Single Woman Alone

not being biased - but I would suggest you either Dubrovnik or Hvar (both in Croatia) and on top of that - depends on you budget, I would add sailing. Now, that can be tricky, since down there they are renting out the whole sailing boat - so I would contact them in advance, would be a nice to them and explained that I would like to join a group (if OK) for a sailing - in that way cheaper to everyone.

I do that when I am traveling alone - last couple of years and I love it
