yesterday's airshow in Canada...

video here:

Main aspect is that the pilot survived, and rather well apparently. But the specialists of the RCAF now of course will try to find out what happened exactly and why it did.

Looks like the right engine failed. If you take a look at nozzles you'll see that the left hand nozzle is wide open, but the right hand nozzle is closed.

At such a slow speed the difference in thrust would have produced the sudden yaw that you can see in the video, causing the the right hand wind to drop below the stall speed, and ultimately causing the aircraft to enter a spin

Given the low altitude the situation would have been totally unrecoverable, and the only chance for the pilot would be to punch out - as he did.

I'm sure Assassin, or Wolli, will be along soon to correct me.

Good photos.
I concur. The high alpha low speed pass obviously relies on high asymmetrical engine thrust to allow the airplane to keep it's attitude and when the Hornet started veering to the right, there was simply not enough height for Captain Bews to initiate any recovery maneuver. I hate people who speculate about accidents (especially aviation ones), but this one will undoubtedly look at the F404 engines (what they still have to salvage) and see if that part of the air display needs a higher base. It's just one of those air display things, because there is never any requirement for a fighter jet to perform a high alpha, low speed pass at this height during routine operations. You can enter slow speed flight maneuvers during aerial dogfights, but your minimum altitudes are in thousands of feet, not a few hundred! Good job that he punched out when he did, he'll be getting an ejection seat actuation certificate in the post real soon.

I love aviation. Wish I knew about this airshow. Only been here for a short while and I had no idea it was on.

So you can already book for: http://www.sionairshow.com

I was there in 1997: 100'000 enthusiast aviation fans, 160 airplanes and a great atmosphere.

Look also at www.flightforum.ch

Happy landings

Re: Air Shows

Well I don't know if it qualifies as an airshow, but the flight of Hornets that just went over Dübendorf on reheat and transsonic just cheered me up a bit

...shame it wasn't 10.05pm

In reheat man! Transonic or bust windows is an easy choice with the defense department's lack of budget in 2010 (they're saving their CHFs for a grey airplane with a pointy nose that we all know they'll never get).

Reminder: The Dubendorf Airshow is two days away

Saturday's airshow seems to be more interesting than the Friday one- mainly because more aerobatic teams are participating.

The participants are the same but today is training only. The actual event will take place tomorrow, hopefully with improved weather conditions.

Patrouille Suisse seems to be flying on Saturday only, so that explains it.

No, Patrouille Suisse flew this morning too … for training. The training for the F/18 'Hornet' display this afternoon was very impressive BTW. Looking forward to the air displays tomorrow afternoon!

Re: Air Shows

Is this the reason why there are still so many jets flying over Zurich lake now ?
