has anyone heard of unusual hotel promotions in CH???

Hello there,

Am writing an article about the strong franc deterring tourists coming to Switzerland. Does anyone know of any hotels that are promoting themselves in unusual ways in order to attract clients? Am looking for a little colour.

Thanks a lot!

Aggie

Perhaps you could write about what Coop and Interdiscount are doing.....

Spend over 100chf and receive a voucher for about a 50% discount in one or two select hotels.

Its hardly ground breaking but there you go

The Continental Hotel in Zurich once told some visitors of ours that breakfast was included in their rate. They thought this was good, pointed out to the staff that they did not think it was included, but the staff insisted and so they availed themselves of this offer. On check out they were charged some considerable sum for breakfast and the check-out staff refused to accept that the check in staff had told them breakfast was included.

A quite unique offer that sadly we have never bothered to utilise again.

I mean....seriously.....maybe your article needs to be around the other way....ie What does it tell us about the Swiss hospitality industry that they are NOT doing anything?

Your point is right, of course, but i have honestly never seen or experienced a less flexible commercial attitude than I have from hotels and restaurants in this country. Particularly in the Oberland, many places have been run by families for many years and have not responded well at all to the changes that newer generations demand eg

* minimum bookings for a week (not reduced prices for a week) so that they have empty rooms rather than betray the principle....
* baby changing facilities in mens bathrooms - when I asked, i have had looks as if I'd asked for Polo Hofer to bring me room service breakfast on the naked torso of Xenia T....had to sit on the floor outside the womens WC changing nappies
* warming babyfood....
* kids menus etc etc

I know its a bit off the point, but if you are looking for a receptive and responsive industry with innovative solutions to global situations, you've come to the wrong place, my friend!

Good luck though

I assume Switzerland has always been expensive, even without the Euro change. Are hotels here having a lower fill-rate than usual?

I've only been living here for three months but I'm shocked at the prices in restaurants. "THey must be always empty!" I thought and true enough they usually are. Even weekends. There must be a reason that they don't reduce the prices to get more custom - must be the same with hotels here. Be half full, have a relaxing job, and earn enough.

It's been many years since I last styed at a Swiss hotel so can't comment on recent developments. But what you describe seems to be a universal type of attitude for the hotel industry as a whole.

I was in a 5-star resort hotel in Florida once and I asked if they could call a taxi and they showed me the phone.

I was in a three star Spanish hotel once where they claimed breakfast was included. The next morning I walked around looking for the breakfast room and finally asked at the reception and they pitifully took a small packet of biscuits out of the drawer.

And I was in a hotel in Paris once where the receptionist insisted on inspecting my bags on leaving to check I hadn't stolen anything.

The hotel trade lives in a bubble of its own in my opinion, and that the world over.

Re: has anyone heard of unusual hotel promotions in CH???

Yikes!

I've only had really good experiences here. My middle son even managed to accidentally set the table on fire and they still managed to be nice to us! Sad to hear I was just lucky. For those with children, I can recommend Hotel Alphubel in Saas Fee. They seriously go all out and the childcare is free.

Thanks for the help, aggie

For those seeking a real budget holiday in Switzerland, there is always the Null Stern Hotel, built in an old bunker and selling rooms at around CHF10- each. It's already received extensive media coverage, though, so you might be rewriting an old story.

I will be staying at the Zic-Zac Rock Hotel in a few weeks time. One of the cheapest hotels in Zurich but right in the heart of the old town.

I might even get this room!
