Uto Kulm hotel, Zurich - my thoughts

Stayed here Friday night on a 'Tete a Tete' deal. 400chuffs, which included a 5 course evening meal, Lifestyle double room with city view and Sauna room + breakfast.

First of all, no clear detail on their website about the fact you have to take a train to the top(i stand to be corrected) there is a carpark, but no details or signs/instructions on how you actually then get to Uto Kolm hotel from the carpark, luckily a helpful receptionist guided us up there.

Basically take the train to (last stop) Uetliberg, on leaving the carriage in the middle of the platform follow the steps in front of you up the hill, keep going to the top!

On arrival our checkin was swift and we were directed to our room. Room size was small, very clean and modern but minimal, barely enough to fit our beds in, we had a flat screen Sony TV which was positioned such that when the window was open it obscured the view of the TV.

Popped to the restaurant for our meal to find no actual tables available in the front outside restaurant area, they had reserved us a table right at the back with a rather limited view and inside the building not outside, with a hanful of people seated, no atmosphere, which was a bit dissapointing. We of course requested we sit somewhere else, we managed to get a table just inside the building area, not outside still, but with a slighty better view and cooler.

The meal itself was ok, i have to say it was pretty much hotel standard and not a good restaurant. Even though it was 5 courses the portions were just about ok, certainly not generous. So we asked for a few bread rolls on the way just to pack it out a bit! Service was good though, and friendly. (i rarely eat 3 course meal at home or we share a desert if we have starters!)

Back to our room, to find it was still very hot, so looked for the air conditioning. None there, bearing in mind my 100chuff a night room in the holiday inn express had aircon i wasn't impressed! So we had the window wide open all night, which invited all the mosquitos in.

Breakfast was very good, well presented and a very good range, including bacon and eggs. Couldn't fault breakfast v good.

Conclusion

What i feel you're really paying for here is the view, i staggered up the steel tower after a few more beers to watch the fireworks in the town, an absolutely stunning view.

All in all, nice but i wouldn't do that again. Id rather pop up for a normal meal in the restaurant, prebooked out the front. And enjoy the view then head home.

Pros: Fabulous view from room and restaurant if you're seated in the right place, nice lively atmosphere in the evening(only outside though).

Cons: Small rooms, No airconditioning, no shuttle service to the hotel. And no clear directions. Restaurant set course forgettable. Cost seemed high for what it was, although im quite fresh from the UK ferry still (6weeks) so im still sensitive to prices here!

Note: Having 2 nippers of our own we noticed a few gaps around the perimeter where an 'untethered' 2year old could easily slip through and then fall a long way down. Keep nippers close to hand.

Re: Uto Kulm hotel, Zurich - my thoughts

I had a friend over from England this weekend and we ventured to the restaurant at the Uto Kulm hotel, after recommendations from colleagues regarding the view.

I prebooked a table about 3 weeks ago, using their online system which is in German and English, without a problem. They acknowledged and confirmed by email within an hour or so. I did my homework and discovered that there was an uphill walk from the station to the building itself but I'm not sure I was prepared for the severity and length of the climb.

I admit I'm not the fittest guy and was out of puff about halfway up. I'm certain my mother would not have made it but she could have caught the shuttle service - a small (electric?) Popemobile-style cart from the railway to the top. I believe you have to book that too, as the driver would not let us on, muttering in German about a maximum capacity of three people (although it has 6 seats).

Needless to say, we did make it eventually (probably 15 mins) and were rewarded with a stunning sunset view of the Alps in the distance and the full panoramic vista of the lake and city. As the OP says, there is a tall steel observation tower but I could not have gasped my way up that for all the tea in China (or chocolate in Switzerland, for that matter) and I'm not sure you'd see much more, anyhow.

There is a paved deck that extends right to the edge of the steep drop and from there you can sweep your eye across the airport, suburbs and right the way down the lake. Breathtaking. To one side, there's an outdoor section of the restaurant but we chose to sit inside as the night air was cool for my partner.

The choice on the menu is wide-ranging, certainly, but not entirely Swiss. Indian green beef curry, spicy chicken with BBQ fries, and plain American beef tenderloin all feature alongside more refined choices such as salmon-wrapped asparagus terrine, calves' liver in Calvados and the de facto Zurich-style Geschnetzeltes veal fillet with creamy mushroom sauce. In the end, we opted for the set menu (as did the OP, I think)... five courses, served at a leisurely pace and reasonably well prepared. A couple of glasses of wine and some diet Coke (for me) brought the bill to a total of CHF200,-.

Good value? Not so bad, I suppose. Quality cuisine? Not great but OK. Recommended? Definitely should be on the menu for any Zurich tourist, just for the view.

EF over-exaggeration of the year.

Context, as always, is everything.

If one has booked a table at a reputedly nice place for a romantic meal out, one doesn't really expect to have to walk up a rough, stony path for ten minutes to get to it.

Quite honestly, knowing about other restaurants with spectacular views, which are easily accessible by bus, tram or car, I'd never recommend the Uto Kulm for a posh dinner.

This is Switzerland - unlike other countries, they expect people without health problems but with two legs to be able to walk a bit. There are loads of restaurants that you can only get to on foot.

But, I can appreciate that all this walking may be a shock to people who haven't been here long.

You could do as I did. Take the train up; walk to the top and up the tower to see the view. It is worth the effort. No charge for the view.

Have lunch at the cafe by the station for a fraction of the price.

Pricey but pretty.

Spectacular (but look at the timetable before you go).

EDIT: I guess the second one doesn't really meet your "convenient" criterion.

Sorry about that.

Or do as lots of us do - walk or run up from the bottom - then it's totally free.

This one's got good food and a lovely view over Lake Zuerich. It's above Pfaffikon, SZ and there's a car park!

Restaurant Luegeten

(I haven't eaten there in the last couple of years though).

We had our wedding reception up there (it wasn't our first choice as places get booked up a long time in advance).

Anyway, everyone walked up including my wife in a wedding dress.

Given I weigh about 170kgs and smoke, yes, it was a struggle getting up there with a rest halfway . I was prepared for a climb similar to the one up Alcatraz and this one seemed steeper, longer and a lot more pebbley.

Thanks for the sympathy. Perhaps you'll give me a piggy-back next time?

Health review required, perhaps?

Actually, when we first moved here, we found the path to our flat from the town centre very, very steep, especially with a bag of shopping. However, persevere and all gets much easier.

I sometimes forget this when we have visitors from abroad and our idea of an easy hike is a major undertaking for them.

One might, if one spent between 30 & 60 seconds on Google.

I think this was my point entirely. I spent more than a minute on Google and still thought the climb was longer and steeper than anticipated BY ME.

Anyhow, we made it, the meal was so-so but the view compensated any misgivings over the trek and the food.

I took Spottydog there for Valentines day last year. I insisted that Ugg boots weren't acceptable footwear for a restaurant (or anywhere else for that matter). She managed to get up the snow covered slope in heels. Back down after a bottle of wine each was more fun though.

I walked fro my front door in Wollishofen via Leimbach and walked all he way up to the top of Uetliberg no problem until I got to the steep wooden steps around the back of Uetliberg. That was the killer. I had to rest half way up the steps. It was quite disheartening.

I run there from my house sometimes. It takes me 3.5 hours on a good day. It took me 4.5 hours in a blizzard a couple of years ago (it was A white-out on the Albishorn part of the ridge).

The steep wooden steps are definitely the killer for me too.
