Re: Anybody going to the Axalp airshow this year?

2017 update.

i went wednesday for the first time. bought a ticket when i saw they went through with the training on tuesday. armee.ch/axalp gave indications the night before the event that it would probably go on. final confirmation would come at 8 am on the day itself (although by then i was on the way already).

arrived on brienz station about 10:00. no queue for shuttle bus, but took like 15min for it to fill up and get going. shuttle takes about 25 mins to axalp.

saw a big queue for the cable lift, but i went for the full hike. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE. hiking up is no joke. no warming up, just goes straight up from the get go on muddy stones and slippery grass. although you can also follow the road for an easier but longer hike. if i remember correctly it took me 1h15 ish to get to the first spectator zone. i am 30something nonsmoker, sedentary but slim.

from the cable lift it looked relatively flat with a bit steeper section towards where the hikers and lifters merge. pretty short hike to go from lift to first zone. still need decent shoes because it is rocky/muddy.

i think the view from the first zone would be pretty crappy. the targets are far away or even out of view? to go from first zone to the second and third zone is another serious climb up. the terrain is a bit weird, almost like a staircase with 50cm high steps. pretty crowded here. i think it took me roughly an hour to go from zone 1 to 2/3. the path between 2 and 3 is closed half an hour before the show. i am not sure but maybe you cant even reach the first zone anymore at that time.

you want to be on time anyway as f18 and f5 target practice is start of the show. watch smoke from plane, watch target, hear target impact, hear gunfire in that order. slightly confusing at first

i was towards the front of zone 3. good view of 2 targets but there was a third target i could not see. best spot would be all the way in the top corner.

it was sunny as hell so dont forget sunscreen. i was happy to have brought an umbrella as a literal sunscreen but dumb enough to have forgotten sunglasses, oh well. no queues for food/drink if you time it right (during the show). most people brought their own consumables i think, saw several people fondueing. swiss overdose lol. enough toilets as well.

the way back was of course just as steep as the climb in reverse. good shoes pay off here because the weird terrain might ruin your ankles. HUGE queue in front of the cable lift as naturally everybody is going through this bottle neck at the same time. was more than happy to walk down to axalp, stayed on the road this time.

shuttle bus was perfectly organized. solid queue but it's constantly moving so wait time was maybe 10-15 minutes? perhaps i was in the first batch of buses that had not gone down yet. could be that they have to slowly trickle back up after that, increasing waiting times.

all in all, great day. very well organized with swiss/military precision
