One day car hire in Basel.

Friends coming from Oz beginning of September so thought we'd hire a car for one day only to drive over to Alsace and do a bit of a villages and winery tour. One day hires can often be tricky to find, have found one or two so far, any recommendations? Is pick up at Basel Europort easiest? It's a Sunday we are looking at.

Cheers, thanks.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

If a company has cars available, it shouldn't be a problem to rent them for one day. I've many times rented cars for trips to Alsace - the public transport there is non-existent!

Renting at the airport is usually more expensive, but they have earlier pickup hours. Otherwise try Europcar at the Messeplatz or Sixt at Badischer Bahnhof.

Try the trial membership at mobility.ch or try Europcar like suggested earlier.

Sometimes you get a real good deal if you book a car for the whole weekend.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

You can rent a car by the hour via the SBB - Mobility!

The SBB also do car hire (Click and Drive) but check with any Swiss company that their insurance allows you to drive into France!

http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/reisemarkt/ser...clickdrive.htm

Click & Drive

Click & Drive, The SBB offers you, along with train tickets, a car rental at SBB train stations, by working with Mobility Car Sharing.
Click & Drive
Click & Drive: Your car at the station.
At 350 stations in Switzerland, you can
Click & Drive-cars - rent by the hour. For example, for the road this weekend with the convertible, for a picnic with the whole family or for a trip to a place that you can not reach by public transport.
Click & Drive, the car rental price SBB train stations, offers you the SBB along with Mobility Car Sharing.

How it works:
You reserve your car online or by phone around the clock at the Mobility 24 hour service 0848 824 812th
Once a reservation, you pay for your rental car by credit card.
The price is all inclusive: rental, fuel, unlimited mileage, insurance, repairs, administration.
You get the reservation confirmation and the user agreement with your original driving license to a ticket sales counter at one of the 75 largest SBB stations.
At the SBB ticket you will receive the Mobility-Card (access card) for your rental car at the railway station.
You go to the Mobility-site at one of the 350 stations and open the car with the mobility card.

Don't forget, they only have red cars!

You book cars per 24 hr period, so arrange a pick up the night before and return the next day.

Pick up is usually during office hours, so airport is best as they have longer opening times.

Drop off does not usually require open office hours, so that won't be a problem on Sunday.

Don't have the whole weekend hence the Sunday trip.

And don't have anywhere to put the car overnight.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

I rented recently to drive to Frankfurt for an airport pick-up from Basel and the best deal I found was holiday autos from the UK.

holidayautos.co.uk

My shopping around was limited to taking the 50 bus out the airport and checking at the counters in the Swiss and French side, and running prices on expedia etc.

I was at the airport last Sunday heading to Paris.....car rental desks don't appear to be manned on Sundays! Checked a few times during the couple of hours I was there but no luck so it's back to Google.

I'll try holidayautos though, thanks for that.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

If you are planning on exploring, which to me means a fair amount of kms, Mobility may not be your best option as their km rates will kill you on longer trips (even if gas and insurance is included).

I have also used Holiday rentals and it worked well for me. They will most likely use Europecar at the airport in Basel. The rate through them for a small car (Renault Clio) is about 50 Pounds and for a VW Passat it's about 100 Pounds. You can use them on Sundays.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

If you are renting from the airport, be sure to check out the costs of renting from Basel (CH) vs. Mulhouse (FR). Renting from the French side of the airport is usually a lot cheaper. Note that you need to return the vehicle on the French side, too -- there's no way to cross sides once you're on the airport grounds.

I discovered this the hard way, pulling up on the Swiss side. I had to do a 10km detour back to the motorway, through the border crossing, and back to the airport via the French entrance. In the end, I was about 20m (and one very tall fence) from where I'd started. Luckily I had plenty of time before my flight.

If you're going to do many KMs, you'll find it cheaper to rent a car from the airport for a 24h rental than using a mobility car. Less hassle as well.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

Thanks for the info. I had a feelling Mobility wasn't going to work so hadn't realy looked at that one. The UK crowd seems to be OK and yes, pick up and drop off will be at the airport. Easier anyway being a Sunday by the looks of it. I did notice some hefty charges when I was first looking so maybe that was because I was checking Basel city prices. Thanks for the tip. As we are only going to Alsace for the day, not even 24 hours, it makes sense to pick up on the French side.

My friend will drive, his wife and I can just sit back and relax, but his Australian licence will be OK won't it? I told him I have an international if necessary but we think the local licence will be fine.

Cheers.

I think you should at least have an official translation for the driving license, best to ask first! The problem is the car insurance companies put hard and fast rules on the car hire companies, the agents are not permitted to waiver the controls. They must be able to see that the driver is qualified to drive a car from the rental group.

What was wrong with the SBB car hire? It looked fine to me.

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

From all accounts, Mobility charges more if you drive lots of kms so may not be right for us. I did have a quick look at the site, there was also something about a card to gain entry too, I'd rather just deal with plain old keys! So still working on the final choice.

And I doubt my friend will bother getting an official translation for his licence for one day! He has driven in France before with no drama so hope the same will be the case this time.

No need. An International Drivers Permit is recommended, but not compulsory, for driving in France. Your friend's Australian license should be all he needs to pick up an rental car and drive for a day.

Great, thanks. And if I have to drive, I will. I have both my Oz licence and an international so we are covered one way or the other!

Have you concidered renting a car in France as I see you live in Basel?
It might be cheaper and they might be more flexible and have more cars available and do cheap weekend rates.

I did have a quick look online but St Louis seems to have nothing and Colmar wasn't much help either. Part of the problem seems to be because it's a Sunday. If you know of something, do tell!

Re: One day car hire in Basel.

Hertz has cars from the airport (French side) on a Sunday. Prices start from about EUR100- for the day.

In this case, cheaper to rent from the Swiss side. Same dates, cars start at CHF109- for a prepaid rental, 120- for a pay-on-return rental.

Cars rented from the Swiss side have the added advantage of having a vignette. French cars won't have one, as a rule.
