Nice route (by car) Geneva Airport to Lausanne

Hey guys and girls.

My folks are coming to see me next weekend and will be hiring a car from Geneva Airport, where I will meet them.

I've only been here for a weeks or so and haven't done the airport run by car yet and I'm wondering if there is a nice scenic route from Geneva to Lausanne that avoids the motorway?

I see from google maps that there is a road that runs around the edge of the lake or some more that go more "inland" from the lake which may have some nice little villages and chateaux. Either way is good for me so I'm interested to hear any recommendations.

Thanks

Take the lakeshore route you mentioned - through Nyon, Gland, Rolle and Morges. Nyon and Morges are worth a stop if you have time.

Route Nationale by the lake as mentioned. Also worth a peek is St. Prex and Rolle down by the lake.

Futher on to Montreux, where you live??, Cully is an absolute pearl.

If I had three picks between Geneva and Lausanne it would be Nyon, Morges and St. Prex. The first two speak for themselves but St. Prex is a gem of a place and not many people bother to divert off the lake road which takes you north of the old medieval town so they miss it. Very quiet, very atmospheric. St. Prex is actually my favourite lakeside village. Make sure you see the entrance into the bourg with the clock at the top of the Grand Rue. Also lovely lakeside walks here.

Suggest as you have a car to also make a trip to Evian. Easy peasy from Montreux. Best pizza I have had on Lac Leman. Restaurant La Pizza on 4 Place Charles de Gaulle.

Another great 'Za' place is in Nyon up in the old town, Croixe Verte. http://www.croixverte.ch/
Great feu du bois pizzas in old building setting with cool garden

Re: Nice route (by car) Geneva Airport to Lausanne

We have some plans for most of the weekend so it was really just to make the trip from the airport more memorable, but I'm here long term so I will be sure to check out all of these places soon.

I'm on my own this weekend while my wife is in the UK so I might do some exploring then if the weather stays like this. I may be tempted to go up to Les Diablerets though.

St. Prex is definitely worth seeing, and yes it's easy to miss.

If you want something memorable, I would definitely take the 'route de vignoble', ie the wine growing region tour. There is even a website--http://www.routeduvignoble.ch/

The views are breathtaking and it is perfect for autumn. If into wine, wine-tasting along the way is perfect. Lots of farm stands and small villages you wouldn't otherwise cross. Lots of restraunts for lunch if that suits as well.

Agree, this is well worth the effort, esp in Fall (autumn). Great views from above when they run the Lausanne Marathon on the Route Nationale, towards Vevey and back.

Re: Nice route (by car) Geneva Airport to Lausanne

I would also recommend the wine route between Nyon and Aubonne. You get better views than from the lake road because you are slightly higher up and there are lots of vineyards to look at up close (although they'll also see that between Lausanne and Vevey if you take the lake road, which you should). From Aubonne, you can then head back down to the lake and have a stop to walk around St Prex. Between the airport and Nyon, I would recommend just taking the motorway - the lake road is not as nice in that part because the views are often blocked, it's busy and can be slow. I always think that the nice part of the lake starts in Nyon.

Agreed. Take autoroute to Nyon or Gland, then follow route du vignoble. I find it slightly easier to pick up route du vignoble from Gland exit than Nyon exit, only about 3 min. more down autoroute and easier access. When getting off at Nyon, you have to traverse all the Nyon city traffic for something that is not too interesting, unless you take a more convoluted route from Nyon-Trelex-Coinsins-Vich, which requires GPS in my opinion.

Re: Nice route (by car) Geneva Airport to Lausanne

I would agree with the more recent posters. The lake route is not really by the lake. There are some charming villages to negotiate (Coppet, Nyon, Rolle) but there's not much of a view and you can't see the lake. Nearly all the way the strip of land between the road and the lake is wooded private property with villas and chateaux. And there are some rather miserable bits as well: the charm of la cote shopping warehouse area anyone?

The autoroute out of Geneva is quite scenic (so long as the traffic is moving) and you get good views of the French Alps and the Jura. Then take the route vignoble and you get superb views across the lake.
