CGN call time on 'Vevey' on Lake Geneva

It appears that Lake Geneva may be losing one of its famous paddle steamers later this month. One of the older ones 'Vevey' is being withdrawn from service next week and there doesn't appear to be any plans for its restoration. After 103 years and 3million kilometres, it obviously needs something of a major overhaul. I hope that this isn't the beginning of the end for the older paddle steamers.

CGN site (In French)

Noooooooo, it's my favourite boat - used to stay in Nyon with my Godparents as a child, and we always took a trip on the 'Vevey'. Criminal.

We all signed their petition, the entire family with relatives who came to visit us, if anyone can still take the CGN service and sign up their petition it might not happen, maybe? Unite!

Yes, if you are speaking French. Even the local tourist board call it Lake Geneva in English http://www.lake-geneva-region.ch/en/TownsLakes

Signing a petition is all very well but it might be more practical to contribute to the restoration fund. See this and this.

That is going to take a lot of collecting tin rattling to restore one of them, let alone all eight. Without some major intervention, I fear that there could soon be several more lined up at Ouchy.

Re: CGN call time on 'Vevey' on Lake Geneva

Not sure where this will lead, but it seems that the Vaudois parliament wants the vessels preserved: Les navires seront rénovés. Difficult economic decisions, not sure that I fully understand the issues.

It seems that there is also action in Geneva, though I find it even less clear (lacking a lot of background on the issues): Si la CGN est scindée en deux, le personnel fera la grève.

I am not terribly interested in the issue, just ran across the first link while scanning Le Matin; led me to the second one.

Re: CGN call time on 'Vevey' on Lake Geneva

The Vevey is not the first of this type of boat to be retired recently. When we took a CGN boat on Lake Geneva in late 2005 (maybe 2006), we learned that it was the boat's last voyage, it was called the Italia. There was a party atmosphere on board, with lots of people coming out for the trip, some of them dressed in Belle Epoque clothing.

Many people had been on the boat all day and had already had quite a bit to drink. The captain even let a couple of people get on the microphone and they started singing some folk songs over the ship's loudspeakers. When we crossed paths with the regular boat to Evian, we stopped in the middle of the lake for a couple of minutes while the two captains honked at each other and everyone waved back and forth. At most ports that we stopped in, there were people (mainly fathers and sons) who had come out just to wave to the boat one last time.

We were very lucky to have been on that voyage accidentally. If any of you get a chance to do so for the Vevey's last voyage then I certainly encourage you to do so.

Re: CGN call time on 'Vevey' on Lake Geneva

The SS Simplon will be put back into service this weekend following its restoration. It is obviously a mammoth undertaking keeping these boats in operation. Hopefully the others will return before too long.
