Convince me to visit these places!

During my visits to Switzerland over the last four years or so, I have travelled extensively on the SBB network, visiting many far-flung places.

I was looking at the Swiss Pass map and realised that there at only a few, relatively short, sections of the main lines that I haven't travelled on. (See map below)

There are, of course, many of the regional lines to small towns and villages to explore.

Can you convince me to travel along these remaining sections and the places I should visit in the vicinity? Geneva and Locarno are obvious candidates but where else do you suggest?

I have visited Lugano, Bellinzona, Brig, Lucerne, Bern, Basel, and Lausanne at the ends of these sections, although some of them only fairly briefly.

Re: Convince me to visit these places!

Take the Brig to Domodossola train have a wonderful lunch in Domodossola then catch the train to Locarno over the Centovalli, with the Centovalli train.
It is such a beautiful trip. Once you are in Locarno, take day trips to Ascona, Valle Maggia and Valle Verzasca - If you are brave, take a jump like James Bond at the Verzasca dam.

Re: Convince me to visit these places!

Cham, of course. Walk around the lake park and then have lunch at the Milchsuedi by or above the Lorze river. After lunch follow the river downstream till you reach a beautiful mill house in between trees and meadows. Look up and you might spot a big grey bird, an egret perhaps. Look down into the crystalline water and you'll spot trout and other fish.

Happy trails!

if you come, you will have to taste (and test) the local beer

there is a danger with this beer : you can turn Protestant....

and you could eat a Cheesecake.....

Last edited by Bertrand - Geneva; 01.10.2010 at 09:27. Reason: the cheesecake

and, why is that we should "convince" you? the world is filled with other places, I encourage you to explore elsewhere if you are not sure about coming here. It will be cheaper for you, and less crowded for us.

When winter has fully kicked in (i.e. when the snow has arrived), i would highly recommend taking the quaint red train from Chur to Arosa.

Re: Convince me to visit these places!

As the weather and surcharges scuppered my plans to visit over Christmas, I will be returning in April/May.

The Geneva area wins on my list of places that I haven't been to before. I will base myself in Lausanne for some of my visit. I will be staying in St. Gallen for the remainder of my trip.

Are there any particular festivals, or other special events, that I shouldn't miss out on at Easter or May Day?

Nope. I think you have done enough!

Seriously though. I can't believe you haven't been to Geneva yet. For shame!!

I LOVE Locarno. There is something about it that feels less glossy than Lugano. It's really one of my favorite towns.

The map is too small for me to see what other places you have high lighted.

This is an awesome trip. And if you get to Arosa, take the cablecar up to the top of Weisshorn. Go all the way to the top and up the escalator. Simply spectacular views.

I shot this last winter from the top of Weisshorn in Arosa...freehand...with a little Canon G10:

Re: Convince me to visit these places!

Murten is a jewel of a small town.

Also La Chaud de Fond if you are interested in La Corbusier architecture, his Villa Turque, owned by Ebel Watch, is a must to visit. The town itself is quintessential Swiss JURA, but this house is not; uplifting it is. Get info on Ebel website for tour days,

You will get a better view of the map if you click on it, but not enough to see all the individual towns. The trouble with Geneva is that it is tucked away almost on its own. When I was in Montreux, I got as far as Lausanne but other things distracted me from going further. This will be remedied in April. Ticino is still on my 'to do' list. I have visited Bellinzona and Lugano briefly and must return.

I can thoroughly recommend it. I have spoken to several EF members who say that I have seen far more of Switzerland than they have. I guess that I am fortunate not to have the distraction of work etc. while I am there.

Some of my friends seem puzzled that I keep returning to the same place. I see it as several countries: Mountainous, lakes and valleys, forests and open countryside, Riviera climate to glaciers, old towns and history, modern architecture and quaint rural festivals. The variety is endless.

Wherever I have visited there has been something surprising.

The West of Switzerland will certainly feature on my list before too long. I have visited Fribourg and was impressed.

I have visited Arosa on several occasions. I went to the top of Weisshorn in August. Sadly the visibility was not good. A reason to go back one day.
