Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and Android 2.2 Froyp Update

Hi All

I recently bought a samsung galaxy i9000 on 2 yr contract from Orange. I realized later that it is running on android 2.1 OS rather than 2.2 (Froyo). I believe that Froyo was released long time back but I am not sure if Samsung galaxy in Switzerland has received this update. Yesterday's release of Nexus S (which is just a refined Galaxy S) with OS 2.3 Gingerbread has further dampened my hopes that I will ever be able to go to level 2.3 of OS update, going by the speed of its release to consumer markets.

Can anyone confirm if they have updated their fone OS to Froyo 2.2 through Kies (Samsung PC-2-Phone connecting software) or are they also, like me , waiting for the update to be released !

I have an HTC desire via Orange as well. It came with the 2.1 but about a month ago the 2.2 was released. The phone has a check for update setting and it found and downloaded it.
Can you check for updates from your phone?

It has started to roll out to sim free devices since November. Yours will be orange branded so you have to wait for Orange CH to update this.

The Nexus S has the vanilla version of Android. That means there is no extra skin added and it's how Android was intended to be. That's why it will get 2.3 OTB

Re: Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and Android 2.2 Froyp Update

The only way to update Galaxy S is through Kies software of Samsung, that is what I know of. May be I am wrong..... But I checked my Fone and it has no option of checking for update and depends entirely (perhaps) on the update being made available through Kies....what irritates me is the delay.... . That said, what can I do, when there seems to be many more like me, waiting for their galaxies to be upgraded

Thnx for ur reply

The update would be OTA (over the air)

I agree. That is why I thought to ask if someone here in Switzerland has had any luck in getting their orange sim locked galaxy S to be upgraded. The delay is so much so that even perhaps 2.4 would be out by the time 2.2 is made available

This is why I only get sim free phones now.

I'm sure you can root and get Froyo on your phone though.

I guess "root" is an galaxy equivalent of iphone "jailbreak", which may perhaps void my guarantee. I will wait for orange to annouce the update, Thnx much for your replies. They were most helpful.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and Android 2.2 Froyp Update

i've got an unbranded Galaxy s and have Froyo on it since a month.
I downloaded it through Kies. Hook you phone up and see if it finds any updates. The Kies version needs to be up to date before hand though

Have unbranded (but most likely SIMlocked) Swisscom Galaxy S. Still running 2.1. and nothing available in KIES.

In my experience you should avoid Orange if you want to have any upgrades. I hope Swisscom turns out to be better - at the least the network coverage is lightyears ahead.

hi Yjt

I have also have an unbranded phone. Product code: GT-I9000HKAAUT. Stuck with Eclair, no Froyo. Checked Kies is the last version. What is your product code?

Not sure if this is still interesting, but I also have HKDAUT and only recently got the update to 2.2 - not impressed so far, a bit buggy. In any case, I believe you do have to connect it to Kies on your PC to get the update if you don't already have it - here was my response from Samsung about a month ago about the update:

"Samsung thanks you for your message and the interest which you carry in its brand.

The Update Froyo 2.2 will be sent to you through the Software Kies on your computer.

If your telephone is unbranded and you didn't received it, we invite you to reinstall the Kies software and to
see if the update is available.

You'll find the last version of the Kies software following the link below:

http://ch.samsungmobile.com/FRA/assi...gkies_20100817

If, after reinstalling the software, you don't receive any update, you can contact our service partner
Mobiletouch, which will do the update at the repair shop:

Mobiletouch AG
Industriestrasse 26
8404 Winterthur
Tel: 0522340303 "

Re: Samsung Galaxy S i9000 and Android 2.2 Froyp Update

Just installed 2.2.1

Goto Pocketpc.ch

Firmware version details are here:

http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-galax...tml#post700622

How to do it can be found here:

http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-galax...tallieren.html
  1. Basically download the software 'Kies Registry updater' and unzip/rar it.
  2. Open Kies
  3. Connect your phone
  4. Run the registry updater (if more than one phone has been attached, asks to erase details and restart Kies, so you then go back to 2). This 'fools' Kies into thinking you have a different setup on your phone (only changes the registry on the PC not the details in the phone which is read from the phone by KIES every time it connects).
  5. Select Update phone
  6. Check version to upgrade is JS3
  7. Follow the instructions, then sit back and wait for the magic to happen.
Discliamer: I am not responsible for any data loss, phone errors, breakages etc.... You do this at your own risk...... However three of us in the office have done this and had no issues.

Edit/NB: Make sure you have the latest version of Kies. This installs a 'generic' Samsung version of Kies, so for me, I no longer have the 'Swisscom' version.

Gr8 news for you. Perhaps for the Orange users, they just have to wait till the Orange (contract) rots and I opt for some other carrier. Apparently Galaxy 2 is being rolled out from May 2011 and I believe if Orange (Switzerland) opts to include it in its list of available models, it would be coming with 2.3 Android OS.

This pipeline
OS developor trials (google) ---> Manufacturer trials (Samsung) ----->Carrier trials (Orange) -----> Bilbo-baggins
is most frustrating aspect of Android systems. Atleast for Apple developed OS, it goes str8 from Developer to User.

Really annoyed with this waiting period and then eventually getting an out-dated OS for fones

I'm also on Swisscom but managed to uprade to a Generic Galaxy S version of 2.2 a long time ago. And a couple of weeks ago I managed to get 2.3 before they pulled it.

You can now get 2.3 through Kies. I have 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Had 2.3 for some time but they pulled it and have now made it available again, where I was able to get another update with the patches.

Sure? AFAIK, the 2.1 -> 2.2 upgrade only comes through Kies on the SGS
