Advice on the best netbook

Please can anyone advise me on the best value netbook for my purposes? I intend to use it when delivering training sessions so I need to be able to put video and sound files on it and then connect it to beamers/screens/TVs in different training rooms.

Any advice appreciated.

thanks!

Re: Advice on the best netbook

I would advise to go for a 13" laptop rather than a netbook... much more versatility, connectivity, and power. Much better suited to business.

As always, knowing a budget helps greatly.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

Yes, netbooks usually are very underpowered... you get what you pay for. It will struggle to play many videos (not even high def stuff). Be wary... maybe better to spend more and get a 'real' laptop, on the small side... 13" or such if you want the portability. If you don't need a PC for some reason and can afford it (they are more expensive) consider a Mac... the new Mac Air is amazingly light, but has good speed, beautiful screen and is oh so light and thin.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

On the other hand there are now more powerful netbooks with ION 2 (or similar) which might do just fine.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

Can anyone tell me which shop in Zürich has the largest selection of netbooks?
XXL Interdiscount? Or is there something better?

Thanks!

You may find a tablet is a better proposition if it's primary use is pushing video to a tv. IPads are pretty expensive, but if you are able to travel some of the newer android ones can be had prtty cheap.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

There's netbooks and there's netbooks. I would look for something with a dual core processor (opposed to single core). I quite like the looks of the HP Mini 5103, Atom N550, especially with the 1366x768 screen (at digitec for 592 with windows or 416 with linux)

Thanks, but am looking for a "real" shop, so we can "touch and feel".

Usage is pre-teen surfing, facebook, music, videos and (hopefully) minimal gaming, whilst also getting used to day-to-day use of a computer - writing essays, texts, letters, e-mail, calculations etc. Budget is around CHF 400 - 500.00 max. I have an iPad2 - but that's not what we're looking for. I would consider the smallest Mac book, but don't want the recipient to get mugged for the ownership of something like that.

Thank you! Will take note and look at HPs too.

Is Linux = Android? And are the viruses and security problems as bad as I have read recently? In 20 minutes there was a report saying Android was the new Windows, which doesn't say an awful lot to me as a Mac user.

Have just seen that digitec does have actual showrooms in Zurich. I was under the impression that it was only an online store. So, thanks for that recommendation.

Ehm I would advice you to get the windows version.

To get an idea of what (free) Linux looks like:

Well, now I'm completely confused. Why Windows then if Ubuntu is so good?

Re: Advice on the best netbook

I recently bought the Asus EeePC 1015PEM, Atom N550, 10" WSVGA.

It works great. Windows7 starter is decent (but they prevent you from changing the desktop picture which just seems cheap - the other restrictions that might be present I haven't noticed). I'll dual boot with Ubuntu later. I have Libre Office running in windows. I also got rid of a lot of programs (read forums for advice).

It plays videos fine, probably wouldn't play highdef stuff. I'm playing with VLC. It has VGA output, I used it for a presentation the other month.

I've heard it recommended to buy another gig of RAM.

Dual core processor, great battery life, I like ASUS hardware.

Keyboard is nice, I have no problems - much better than the original 901 model.

345CHF on digitec.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

I just got an Acer Aspire one d255e for my kitchen, also with n550 cpu and 1gig ram.

Can't really go wrong for the price, it's only 299 chf at Steg (they have a few stores around the country)
http://shop.stegcomputer.ch/shop.asp?prodid=518089

An upgrade to 2gig costs 35chf, you need a specific kingston memory model just for these Aspire One netbooks, they're quite picky. I tried 2 other modules and they didn't work.
http://www.techmania.ch/details.aspx?pid=2276305

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it and it's running very well. Their new Unity interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it's not too bad. Not a big fan of that Windows 7 starter edition that it comes with, but maybe it's ok.

If you want to connect yours to a TV though, I would suggest spending a bit more money on something with an HDMI port, like a Thinkpad x220, it's only about 10x the price :-)

With regards to finding a computer at a proper store, use www.toppreise.ch to search, then select "pickup" and "only dealers with retail outlet" - this should let you narrow down your search to proper shops, although they won't include the big ones like Mediamarkt, melectronics, inter discount, manor, etc..

http://www.melectronics.ch also has some good deals sometimes.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

Mediamarkt has a lot you can play with.

I do all my business with Digitec---but they're 'showroom' isn't really that much.

In reality--for simple surfing, chatting, emails....an older computer could actually be a good call.

I have a celeron 333 running SimplyMephis(Linux), and my mom--basic window user--perfers it, said it's more simple and user friendly. It also runs faster than many newer pcs now.

Absolutely! Just went down to the Digitec showroom on Pfingstweidstrasse. There's only one netbook - a cheapie Acer One for CHF 249.00 - that's it. Plus a few laptops, iMac and apple stuff. Very small selection of the many goods they have online.

So we went to Interdiscount XXL just off Bahnhofstrasse. They have loads! Not all plugged in to play with, but enough to see what's around. Acer, Asus, HP, Samsung.

Our recipient opted for a shiny green Acer One - with the specs mentioned above. Now to get it started...

Thanks for all the useful tips.

Re: Advice on the best netbook

You could also try Steg Computer. Have a look on-line (look under netbook on the left) then you can look at one of the showrooms as well. They may not have everything on display but worth a try.

Showrooms:

This is duplicate info from the post above.
